I'm comparing myself to the hollywood failed marriages that someone else used as examples. It's disrespectful because it's OUR definition. They have equal rights already....it just doesn't have to match the same as other to be called equal. We aren't all the same. You advocates seem to have a harder time ac cepting that than us straigahts.

There are places, even in the United States, that don't offer civil unions to same-sex couples... how is that fair and equitable? It's discriminatory, plain and simple.

That all being said, my opinion is that civil unions should be the law of the land. If you want to be "married" in a church, leave that as a religious institution, but make a civil union the actual legal document. Problem solved, everyone is treated the same, and if you want to be "married", it's your prerogative.

They aren't very good examples of true marriage. And if we're going to go along those lines why the hell are gays fighting to be married?!

The act of gay relationships and gay unions is a perfectly acceptable solution. The act of insisting on calling it marriage is disrespectful to those of us heteros that are trying very hard to do it right.

So those examples don't count because they hurt your premise, right? Give me a freaking break here. The United States has the highest divorce rate of any country in the world, and yet we're over here pounding our bibles about the "sanctity of marriage" Everyone should be treated equally under the law, as is stated in the 14th Amendment.

How is a gay marriage disrespectful to you personally? I'm honestly trying to figure out where you're coming from. Because if they have a successful marriage, shouldn't that improve the state of marriage here? Or do you simply have a problem with the homosexual lifestyle and don't believe that they should be given the same rights as hetero couples?

How is it your definition? And can't definitions be changed over time? Look at the meanings of the words "fag" and "gay"... they've vastly changed over the course of the last few decades to mean what they mean now. Slavery was acceptable throughout the world for a long time. Blacks and women were treated as second-class citizens until the second half of the last century. Why is a homosexual relationship and marriage so offensive to you?

Like I said earlier though, there are places where civil unions are not accepted as actual legally binding relationships, and even in places where they are, they aren't given the same legal standing as a marriage.

Seriously... reminds me of a guy I knew on another forum. He said that his biggest fear in life was that his son would become gay. Seriously, biggest fear in his freaking life. Fine upstanding hypocritical Christian gentleman he was.

Oh, and just for the sake of clarification... I'm neither homosexual nor bisexual. I'm a straight guy, but I don't believe that people should be treated differently based on their gender, race, creed, socioeconomic standing, beliefs, or sexual orientation.

The only way anyone could find that disrespectful is if they believed that the love of two gay people isn't as good or deep as two straight people. That is discrimination.
They arn't good examples of straight marriage but they are examples which commonly happen, yet you dont seem to see anything disrespectful about them calling it marriage.
