Today is the official deadline for compliance with the FCC's new interpretation of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act(CALEA).

Cable modem companies, DSL providers, broadband over powerline, satellite internet companies and even some universities all have until the end of today to ensure "...the ability of law enforcement agencies to conduct electronic surveillance by requiring that telecommunications carriers and manufacturers of telecommunications equipment modify and design their equipment, facilities, and services to ensure that they have the necessary surveillance capabilities."

The Justice Department began lobbying the FCC in 2002 to reinterpret the law as applying to the internet as well and last June a divided federal appeals court upheld the expansion 2-1.

Basically, this means that starting today the FBI will have the ability to wiretap your internet connection, and means that "Common carriers, facilities-based broadband Internet access providers, and providers of interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service..." must all now have incorporated into their networks the ability for law enforcement agencies to snoop on those for which they have a court ordered warrant.

Tomorrow the FBI will be able to wiretap all internet users

Have you done something that warrants a search warrant to be taken out on you? If you haven't, you don't have anything to worry about.

When you have family in law enforcement (state & federal level), you are glad to see that these officers have ways to actually catch criminals that could care less about your life or mine or their own for that matter.

this is the whole thing of going back to where Bush wants our phone calls monitered. I'm not doing anything wrong there, but I don't need the government in my business and listening to me.

There is plenty to worry about. They can go through your private information without your knowledge, that is unconstitutional.

And they won't be unless they have a court ordered search warrant for you specifically. And even if they did, which I highly doubt, they could not use it against you without that search warrant. So unless you are searching out how to build bombs on a daily basis and instant messesaging back and forth with Al Quaida, I think you'll be ok. ;)

You don't need to do anything that warrants a wire tap to be listened to... That's the scary part. The Bush administration doesn't believe in warrants and they feel that they have the right to put all of your information into huge data bases for future reference and listen in at any time.

You seem to not recognize the principle of this. The idea of a private citizen being watched and their private information being looked through without their consent, is highly unconstitutional.

Plus, with the patriot act, you don't even have to be looking up dangerous stuff or even be affiliated with a organization to be nabbed. If they even don't like you, the patriot act enables law enforcement to get you without a search warrant, even though this says that they need a warrant. its just put in there to make it look like its just, except the patriot act is at the use of the FBI and overrides any warrants.

Then I must be misreading the article: "must all now have incorporated into their networks the ability for law enforcement agencies to snoop on those for which they have a court ordered warrant."

Sorry I'll modify my views to better suite your feelings next time.

Again....the FBI operates under the Patriot act now, they don't need a warrant of any kind.

Is another thread, but I am not against the patriot act either. Criminals and terrorists don't care about laws and I am tired of federal officers having bounties put on their heads, but so many restrictions that they can't bring the bad guys down. I'm glad the agents in my family can somewhat go after these guys with the same vengeance they are sought after. It is about time the good guys have the odds in their favor instead of the criminals.

Except the patriot act has been used to imprison innocent people and private citizens without their right to a fair trial. That breaks national and constitutional law on various levels. Stop being spooked into throwing away your rights.

Cardinal Richelieu said "If you give me six lines written by the hand of the most honest of men, I will find something in them which will hang him." How long must I be watched to get the equivalent of six lines?

Even though I don't partake in illegal activities, with enough time and effort you could twist the facts and find me suspect for some crime given you had collected enough data on me.

If you don't care about your privacy.....
My response would be "So do you have curtains?" or "Can I see your credit card bills for the last year?"

If law enforcement is not given some latitude tons of criminals, terrorists, etc. continue to roam the streets. Stop being spooked into thinking that just because some abused the system that all will.

It is just like with our American soldiers. They are running around in uniform, while the enemy isn't. Our soldiers are bound to fight within rules of war against an enemy that has no rules of war. It's crap and it gets the good guys killed.

Exactly. it doesn't take much for someone who has something against you to give word to local law enforcement to get you arrested for "suspicious behavior" and have your butt shipped to a foreign country to be interrogated and tortured. Thats not a joke either. It has happened to several foreign students on visa's in the US and abroad simply because they either looked a certain way or were wrongly accused of "suspicious behavior".
