I am really simple minded....I realize that.

I like the "popular vote" approach.

I understand the Electoral College was based on "Equal Representation" but, I think each person casting a vote is as powerful as anything else. Take Bush/Gore, prime example of a filed system, the populous said GORE, the Electoral College said Bush.

That should tell you right there that the system fails.

I think I've kind of got it, possibly! If I have, I voted to scrap it, if not, I say scrap it anyway because it's too damn complicated!;)

I say it's time for the electoral college to fade into the past. As pointed out earlier, because of the vast amount of information we get instantly and the technology that is available to us, we are able to make better informed decisions. This wasn't the case in the past, we relied on word of mouth and news print to keep current.
Think of this for a moment... The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th 1776. I live 60 miles North of Philadelphia, an hour drive. But it wasn't read in my town square until 7 days later. And that is how it was... not now...

I would rather know that my vote is my vote, and that it counts just as much as does the voter standing next to me or the one that's standing in line in Juno Alaska... There is something very empowering to know that no matter what, your vote counts.

I would also like to point out the mess we had with Bush/Gore. It was the first time in our history that the supreme court decided who was president. No matter what side you were on... how did you feel after your vote after that messy election.

Yeah, I'm a little torn on this. What of the issue of State's representation? I know about 75% of the middle of the country would feel pretty screwed by the coasts from time to time.

I dunno. As I can't offer a better plan, I can't complain about the one we have currently.

Weak, but it's all I got.

But how would the one person, one vote concept screw the middle of the country?

since when has the middle of the country gone against the coasts in a presidential election? It's usually pretty even right across the country with party division.

I cannot mount an argument that I believe in against one vote = one vote. What I was getting at was the idea that if 75% of the country geographically feel they get dictated to by 25% of the country geographically, they're going to be pissed. And no matter how fair it is on average, those 4 major population centers aren't going to keep the peace for lack of a better term.

This map shows votes in the 2004 election by popular vote... not the electoral college votes... Looks pretty even to me...

I stood back from my computer about 10', and that map looks pretty similar to the county version.

No matter really. I only know the basics about the college, so I won't be voting in your poll yet. I'll have to look into it more seriously before I want to start throwing stuff out there I might not agree with had I been more educated.

I'm not arguing with you. I'm more thinking 'aloud' at this point. ;)

Maybe the USA should divide into two countries, coastal USA and inland USA. Either that or accept the Queen as you monarch once again and be done with this shit!:jk Seriously, see, your point though.

If there had been telephones back then, she would likely be our Queen today.

As it stands, I like her Pete, but it wouldn't be fair to you guys to have her share her attention so much. ;)
