I see humor in certain arguments being brought up over and over again. If that is seen as animosity, it's not my intention. I do not think it is anyone else's intention either, but I of course could be wrong about that.

Some of the animosity here is done "nicely". Sort of like, backhanded compliments. But whatever we're getting OFFTOPICZ OMG LOL PUN.

anyway back on topic , depending on the crime i say an eye for an eye.

This will only perpetuate the circle of violence in society. One does not teach that something is bad by committing the same crime just because they think its ok for them to do it.

Sometimes the most powerful lesson is giving somebody a taste of their own medicine.

Your kid steals and lies... take his playstation away right in front of him, and then deny it for a few days to let it soak before your heart to heart talk.

... :)

We're not talking about stealing, we're talking about people's lives. Murdering someone back for killing someone only shows society that killing is OK if a bunch of people decide its ok.

Do I believe in the death penalty? No

I think it was the only good way of punishing the worst offenders thousands of years ago when incarceration wasn't practical, but we have better solutions to the problems now.

My problems with the death penalty lies in the fact that although we have a good justice system, it is still flawed. We still sentence innocent people to jail. Until we can completely ensure that the person is 100% guilty of the charges, we shouldn't even consider capital punishment. We also spend WAY too much on a capital punishment case. It ties up the courts and costs 10 times as much. That time and money would be better spent on the backlog of cases the court must face every day.
Life in prison without the possibility of parole costs less in time and money and effectively removes the guilty from society.

You hear a lot of people throw out the emotional card... "What if they killed your son or daughter?" and that's an unfair argument. You start to think emotionally instead of rationally. A good follow up question would be... "What if your son or daughter was wrongly accused of a capital offense and was sentenced to death?" How would you then feel about the justice system and the call for capital punishment? Would your views on capital punishment be the same as they are today?

Yup! I'm in total agreement with Tim. I also find is discusting and torturous the amount of years people spend on death row. People also bring the point up that they should be executed if there is 100% no doubt that the're guilty but I don't think we can ever really be sure of that. There has been numerous occasions of people being stitched up and later found to be innocent, a lot of times when it's too late. There are also cases all the time in the USA of death row inmates being cleared.
