The Budget Ax: Why Homeless Veterans but Not NASCAR?
By Rajiv Srinivasan Friday, Apr. 08, 2011

My eyes always cringe at the sight of a homeless veteran. As I know the pains of war firsthand, it breaks my heart to see that people who have sacrificed so much for my freedom are suffering to such a degree. But it's comforting to know that groups like the American Legion Homeless Veterans Housing Project in Jewett City, Conn., have been renovating old buildings and turning them into shelters for veterans for quite some time. They've raised millions of dollars from private businesses and caring citizens. The federal government has even said it would chip in the monthly rent of $875 for 15 veterans each year and provide additional funds for construction.

Rest of viewpoint here:

Don't our vets and their families deserve much more more?

Maybe they wouldn't be homeless if they weren't so damn lazy. They need to pull them selves up by their boot straps and get off the government dole. I don't want my tax dollars paying for those lazy ass bastards, I'm working hard every day. So what makes them think they are entitled to my tax dollars?

That is an amazingly ignorant statement, and just plain mean. I am sure some of them are lazy, I am not discounting that. However, many of them suffer from very serious mental illness thanks to conditions such as PTSD, and Agent Orange exposure that went un-treated. I am lucky to be a Veteran of this decade, the VA takes care of my service connected injuries. However, the Government found it convenient to forget about a lot of the Vietnam era Vets. A majority of the homeless Vets fall under that era.

I just decided to take the republican stance for once. Isn't that the exact same thing they say about regular homeless folk? What makes it different if they are vets or not?

I'm not ultra-patriotic because of my ideologies, but even I recognize veterans are valuable citizens for their service and sacrifices and deserve assistance. Some of them really get damaged in war, for our protection, right or wrong. I think the most vulnerable citizens deserve tax dollars, just my opinion.
