I was browsing the web and came across The Blasphemy Challenge today. It's been out there quite some time but I just found it.

According to Mark 3 there is only one sin you can never be forgiven for and that is blaspheming the Holy Spirit. There are multiple ways to do this but apparently one of them is saying "I deny the existence of the Holy Spirit."

Let's get this straight. So I could, for instance, kidnap hundreds of children, rape them in front of a camera and then kill them. I could be forgiven for this horrific evil. But if I say "I deny the existence of the Holy Spirit" then I can never be forgiven.

Alright then... I can only think of one thing to say in response to that. I would like to go on record as denying the existence of the Holy Spirit. And I'm not afraid.

Nah. They were giving away The God Who Wasn't There DVD to the first 1000 people who would take the challenge. But that was years ago. I'm sure they're all gone by now.

I am comfortable in the belief when I die that nobody will give a shit and I am just turning to dust or worse depending upon how I get buried or cremated.

I always found it curious that religions used their various threats for your after life.

Seems like instead of forgiving sins we would be better of to try more to prevent the sins from occurring.

Of course then we come down to the definition of a sin. My version is probably a bit different from a fundy.

If God is reasonable and level headed, it should get a chuckle out of that pronouncement, not send you to Hell. ;)

i'm not real good with chapter and verse because i wasn't taught bible in that way, but in genesis, after the flood, the lord YHVH told noah that the only unforgivable sin was to kill.

lol I seriously laughed out loud when I read that. I'm not laughing at you and I have no reason to doubt you. It just struck me as funny considering God had just killed practically everything.

i have a problem with the way he lets satan do whatever he wants to us in order to force us to show that we really love god. it's like they're shooting craps with our souls for stakes

that bit with abraham, isaac and the bullock is a tough one for me, too. what's that supposed to be about?

Yeah, that's a story with a poor moral. Abraham should have told God no.
abraham stood up to him later over sodom and gomorra.

i'm just hoping he's mellowed over the past few thousand years. i think he's the same as zeus and odin and i think that whole crowd did a whole lot of wrong shit and that's why the galactic watchers quarantined this world.

Now THAT is just rediculous!! logically speaking...lol..if I may for a moment doll, don't wanna force this thread too much off topic...lmbo...but correct me if I'm wrong....wouldn't kidnapping and raping hundreds of children fall under the catagory of 'denying His existence'....no? He knows what's in your heart, your every thought...in order to be forgiven of one's sin one would have to really mean it, heart AND soul!! If I've said it once, I think I must have said it at least a thousand times, it's not difficult for a reasonable individual to understand the word of God.

So you see, it's no challenge.

But is it really a sin to not believe? I think sins are things like killing, raping, bullying, hurting others, etc. People should be judged by their actions... not their beliefs. That's not to say that beliefs aren't important. Bad beliefs can lead to bad actions. But it's the actions that are really wrong.

I'm sure not all Christians believe this but, according to some, I can never be forgiven and go to heaven now. Not because I did something bad but because I publicly expressed my lack of belief. IMO, this is a transparent scare tactic invented by some early Christians to keep doubters in line. But I'm not scared. :)

of course it's a sin not to believe, because God was invented by petty, intolerant men.

I think the strategy is to villify doubters. It's called poisoning the well. Unfortunately it's working. Atheists are the least trusted minority in the USA.

of course.

I've been told many a time that without a belief in God, you cannot have morals.

Which makes an interesting point: If you believe in God, are you only doing so to secure a place in heaven? And do you only behave morally for fear of God's wrath?

In my mind, a yes to either one of those makes you a pretty lousy human being.

what's ridiculous?

The topic of the thread.

you know every time I see the title of this thread I think it's like some kind of who can be the most blasphemous competition.... now that would make a great thread!
