'Best job in the world' final shortlist named
April 3, 2009
Students, a receptionist, a teacher and an actress are among the 16 finalists for the Best Job in the World.
Queensland Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor on Friday telephoned 15 finalists across the globe to tell them to start packing for their journey to Hamilton Island in May for the final selection.
A wildcard entry Claire Wang from Taiwan had already been selected for the finals.
The finalists were selected from 50 short-listed for the position.
The short-listed entrants organised stunts from scuba-diving in a tank in Amsterdam to dressing up as a mermaid in downtown Singapore and spruiking at a London pub.
Tourism Queensland has estimated the campaign has achieved about $100 million worth of global publicity for Queensland.
The campaign offers a unique island caretaker role on a $150,000 contract for six months beginning on July 1.
The successful candidate will be based on Hamilton Island and will spend their time exploring the islands of the Great Barrier Reef and reporting back on their experiences.
The Top 16 will fly to Hamilton Island on May 3 with the successful candidate announced on May 6.

Winner of "The Best Job in the World" competition Ben Southall (3th L) of Britain is congratulated by other contestants after Queensland state Premier Anna Bligh announced his name on Hamilton Island, about 950 km (590 miles) north of Brisbane.(Xinhua/AFP Photo)

Fundraiser Ben Southall beat 35,000 people from almost 200 countries to get a 111,000- U.S. dollar- six-month contract.

The 34-year-old will spend half a year swimming, snorkelling and sailing around the tourist paradise. He'll just have to write a blog about his experiences to promote the area. The contest by Tourism Queensland is part of an Australian tourism campaign to advertise the charms of northeastern Queensland. Officials say it's already generated millions of dollars' worth of publicity for the region.
