Thanksgiving

I think that Thanksiving is a time to be with family,not a day to be working or shopping,who else thinks that its a day to be with family?thoughts.

If you believe in the American Constitution, you would probably defend the 'freedom' to do whatever you like on any given day of the year. Personally, I think that expecting people to spend time with their family discriminates against those who have no family, or have family that they've no earthly wish to be with.

Well, for me it'll be a day to be with family... until about 4:30 when I have to leave to work the peak sales hours at my store. Not looking forward to it.

I think it's a day for family and good food. I always spend thanksgiving at my mom's house with her and my sister and brother. I don't get to spend the whole day with all my family, but I am thankful that I can spend the day with the people in my family that are here.

Thanksgiving is a day to get together and feast...family or friends...Its a tradition we have.
You have a very large interest in American culture ...Have you thought about spending some time in the US ?..you might actually like it.

I promise you wont be a victim of a random shooting...but cant promise you wont get frisked for no reason if you are in New york.

They don't celebrate it in the UK, shame really, could do with another turkey meal. For Americans i guess it is like having 2 Christmas's per year (but with different meanings of course).

I read a while back that Thanksgiving is celebrated but in a different fashion, this is, the Harvest Festival that is celebrated in many British cities.

On the other hand Thanksgiving day is for gathering around the table with all of your family members and thank for all what we have received throughout the year.

I don't understand why many people take it as a "any other" regular day.

Curiously, I have friends in countries where there there is no Thanksgiving day either, but they are developing a new tradition to thank God on the last Thursday of November and start with the Christmas season home decor.

Not having grown up in the US, it has no special significance to me. None of my European or Asian friends have ever celebrated it that I am aware of, they have plenty of holidays of their own.

There are certainly harvest festivals in most countries/regions, but none that I know of fall on the last Thursday of November. The British ones I am aware of are around the Harvest Moon in September, or the equinox. In Spain they're more likely to be much earlier in the year, in summertime.

In any case, it's not important enough to me or mine to warrant a bunch of travel since we mostly live in different cities. I have a friend who does a "orphans" Thanksgiving, so that might be fun, especially since this year it coincides with Hannukah as well.

That has to win most depressing post I have read from a thread here yet.

I have friends take the place of vacant family on every occasion that could be necessary. As far as not having it in the UK? Equate it to Harvest Festival.

Geez, I don't see any reason to guilt someone into celebrating a particular holiday.

I'm sure Diwali is awesome, for example, but I'm not Indian and don't celebrate it. If I lived in India, or someplace with a big Diwali celebration then I'd join in why not, but I didn't spent the November 3rd searching for some equivalent local festival to give me an excuse to set off fireworks

I look forward to the food and I would love to go shopping and catch some of the deals out there but I think that would be extra stressful so I'm not even going to attempt it. Regardless of what everyone chooses to do that day I hope everyone still haves a good day.

I agree with you on this. I think Thanksgiving is a day to spend time with the family. I think people should spend more time with their family on every holiday. I do not see the reason some people are so obsessed about going shopping in holiday evenings. In my culture, getting together as a family is the tradition during the holiday seasons.
