Something triggered my memory of this letter. It makes me smile, so I thought I would share. :) I was going to put it in Grace's section, but I thought it might offend some people.

I found this article while browing the web, and thought people might like to read it and perhaps comment on it.

A TRIBUTE TO THE UNITED STATES
This, re-printed in a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing. America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television Commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts.

None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10?

If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy,
and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times - and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."

Stand proud, America! Wear it proudly!!

It doesn't bother me that other countries do not reach out and help us in our times of need, even though I agree that would be the right thing for them to do. It doesn't change my attitude toward others or my heart in what our own actions should be.

Just as long as we keep reaching out to help our neighbors in crisis in this world and protecting our home - that is what matters to me.

Excellent article Intruder. And imagine this coming from a Canadian....more gratitude and pride for America than some Americans themselves. The irony of it.

PT, I was not saying other countries never help us, nor did I mean to imply that. Sorry if that is the way it sounded to you. My thoughts were more of quantity and ratio, not that comparing makes a difference in my own heart. It doesn't. America is very generous. We have the money to be generous, but more importantly we have the desire to be generous.

Nothing wrong will a 'feel good' thread for America, instead of one bashing it. We have more than enough of those on this board.

So basically this is just a nationalistic wank-fest. :p

Speaking of aid, and being there for countries that were going to fail or collapse: We wouldn't have won the revolution if it weren't for France. ;^*

PT, I did not use the words 'all' or 'never'. Regardless, I am not the type of person that speaks in terms of such hard lines. If you knew me, you'd know that about me.

Posting and communicating effectively in written form unless you write for a living is not going to 'say' or convey the full intentions of a 'primitive writer' such as myself. That is why I took the time to post a second time and elaborate to answer your post/question/implication.

If you chose to ignore what I say to give you more insight into 'who I am' so you can get where I am 'coming from', I don't know what further to say. I guess our communication will always be meaningless on here. We can post all day, but if we don't seek to understand each other our posts are meaningless since we don't truly take away what the poster is trying to convey. And unfortunately the preciseness in my writing skills are not going to improve over night. I'm a much better spoken communicator than written one. I hate writing actually.

Grace. You obviously made a mistake in what you said. If you meant to post about the quantity and ratio of aid coming from other countries, then you were waaaaaaaay off.

And on that note, what's the problem with the quantity/ratio of aid coming from other countries? The US is one of the richest countries, so therefor they should be giving more aid per capita.

No I didn't make a mistake, I just didn't feel like writing a paper. The people that have taken the time to get to know me, know exactly what I was saying. If you want to look at it as a mistake instead of exactly how I explained - enjoy your perception.

This cannot be interpreted any other way. You state very clearly that you don't believe other countries help us in our time of need.
For you to turn this into a "well you just don't know me well enough to understand me" argument, doesn't work. I fail to see how knowing someone or seeing their facial expressions would change the meaning of the statement.

:dunno

Maybe you can refresh my memory of the story where a poor woman gave a small amount of money for tithing. And when the rich people saw and laughed, Jesus said something to them.... but I don't quite remember the whole story

Maybe you can stop 'trying' to be a smartass. It only makes you look like an ass, not a smart one Tim.

There is no attempt here at being a smart ass...

You were very clear on your position in that post, and to try to blame it on people not "knowing" you, is not being very honest.
Either you believe what you first posted, or maybe you should have proof read what you wrote before hitting submit. Maybe you'll be better at reading comprehension.
