its good that this thread turned pretty civil - everyone seems to have some mutual respect for one another.

atlantic, i know you heard this already, but might as well say it again - you do leave a pretty inteligent impression, as long as you keep your convictions solid youll be set for college and beyond ( i just graduated college a year ago, but you seem just as smart it not smarter than a lot of people i went with... and i went to a pretty good school... :D )

i also respect your reigious beliefs, even if they are not mine - its alwasys good when people realize what is important about religion. im not christian, but hearning someone say all that about it is refreshing. im atcually jewish - but a lot of the same things apply. bottom line, is that (extremists aside, of course, im not one, and you dont seem like one either) i think anyone can get along....

o yes, i dont feel as though i cant get along with people here. im up for friendly debates. i always like to learn new stuff as well. some of these current events debates havent interested me much so i didnt get as involved, but if i like the subject being discussed, my posts are sure to be coming.

and thanks guys for the compliments. much appreciated.

and lemon- yea i have a respect for everyone here and im pretty open minded to hearing new things. politically, i am middle-right. subjects such as abortion, gay rights, and all are always a good debate, but i cant put myself in a females POV for the abortion one. some of the new liberal agendas being put forth frighten me and the future of our nation. what we need (economically) is not a quick fix, but a plan for a healthier economy for future generations- and i think we are on a good path. we just need to get the hell outta irag and kick some ass. if bush could solve issues diplomatically, this would be an even better nation (from a global POV)

what i think is we should just drop an H-bomb for christmas when we leave iraq... but thats what i think...

and you _seem_ to be very intelligent, or at least someone who thinks things much more thoughowly then i do, and thats good, cuz i dont want to be the nerd :D ..

other than that, i enjoy debate as long as i can keep my tounge curbed...
(or however that would translate to being in the context of this fourm)

with iraq- well a lot of those people (not being stereotypically racist or anything) are not doing things legally. in afghanistan, over 1/2 of the GNP was from farming of marijuana and other illicit drugs. drugs are running through these undeveloped nations with a craze. hindu kush is a new popular brand of pot grown in the hindu kush region of afghanistan.

the middle east is fucked up now too. im glad we live in the western hemisphere :banana

im christian, but not catholic. no offense to catholics, but why do they pray to the virgin mary? just b/c she gave birth to jesus doesnt make her worth worshiping to in my book. i would rather praise the person who took a stand for what is right and gave his life for my sins (in my faith)

there is always criticism on the whole birth scenario of jesus and if mary just pretended to be virgin... but what does all that matter? i look at jesus as a role model. he did amazing things such as turn away peer pressure, stand up for what is right, even if others think it is wrong. that is one of the lessons i've learned in life: "dont succumb to the corporate machine" dont do things just because everyone else is doing it too.. it isnt always right

i know i will never be able to turn away certain things that may seem appealing at the time, but if i learn from mistakes and try to not remake them, i will be a better person. and i will die in 70 years or so anyway so all the satisfaction i receive on earth in my life will be only temporary. complete and total satisfaction comes from a faith, so when you die, your mind and soul have a home awaiting them (at least that is what i truly believe)

Let me clear the praying to Mary thing up for you. its not just the Catholics but also Orthodox Christians, Coptics, Armenians. The reason they pray to the Saints (Mary is a Saint by the way) is for intercession.
The more people you have praying for you on your behalf the better, and having a Saint in heaven to intercede on your behalf is very good.
An interesting thing I heard about the presidents of the USA is that they have prayer groups that pray to God on specific things. Reagon had a couple of Revernds and Clinton had a minister with him when he had to make decisions. Dubbya you know has Jerry Falwell, (the Moral majority) praying for him plus Pat Robertson.

Catholics do not pray to Mary as she were god. There are different types of Marian prayers in the Catholic religion... It's more of praying to the event and also praying to god in the way that Mary did. Mary is seen as more of a saint.... not a god-like creature.
I myself believe in Jesus Christ as a prophet... an enlightened individual. The teachings he spread were of love, compassion and living to one's utmost ability. I consider myself a Buddhist... but you can be a Buddhist and also be so much more. There is no pigeon-holing in my religion. There are many a teacher who consider themselves "Christian-Buddhists"... but personally... I just can't relate with what modern Christianity has become.

i agree with what religion has become. people have exploited religion from its historical meanings and values to a modern, popular event for the uneducated bandwagon.

another thing i dont agree with is extremists of any kind. for example: muslim extremists waging a global jihad on christians? WTF... also some hardcore christians like the guy who bombed the abortion clinic....

i believe religion is an acceptance to thoughts, beliefs, values.. this all creates an enlightened individual who can make better decisions for all people, for the future as well.

it takes a dumb person to believe a religion because he was brought up that way... but it takes an ignorant person to deny religion and its impacts on society (both economically, and spiritually as well).

All off this was to much for me to read, so I say teach both. Some of you guys may of come for a ape, but I didn't

I think that in high school they should teach religion just so kids will know what other people belive. What is so bad about that? School should teach all religions. What is passover? or how about Monks. Why do they hang out with guys? Are they gay? If they teach it in the schools, kids will learn it and know what other people do and why.

lol on the monks thing...

but if you teach the religions in school, then everyone will want to create a religion, and then everyone will want the one they just created to be taught in their school... which would allow for nothing to get done :)....

or teach none of them. it is a touchy subject and the result will make some people happy- but you cant always please everyone. unless you kill the people that disagree with you... but thats what cuba is for

no, you dont have to teach them about religious ideals... just teach them the positive possibility of inter-religous groups...

where they can hang out with each other and not kill each other...

tolerance... thats what they should teach...

just accept that they dont believe what you did...

they do- psychology and sociology... getting things your way, bargaining... etc.. it is all mind games and outsmarting others with manipulating tactics. i dont like to take advantage of people not as smart as me, but if im buying something (my car) i can negotiate the hell out of it.
