I just got back from a trip to Washington (the state), right before I had a very heated discussion with my Father about education in America.

One of the topics (and IMO is the most important) was what material we teach our children, specifically history. I remember that when I was in High School that we were taught that before the great western movement that everone on the east side had "Manifest Destiny". Which is a cover up for kill millions of indians and take their land. But I didn't learn of this until higher education. I always thought that we had a right to move the indians away and take their land, of course the material never mentions the millions that died.

So I was telling my dad that I think we should change the curriculum thats taught and we should give accurate information to our growing youth. He disagreed and stated that during the Elementary, Middle, and High School stages it isn't aobut the accuracy of the information, but to build a passion for learning for the student. He said that many teachers hate the subjects and materials teached to the populous, he said they only do it to inspire kids to learn. Then he stated that higher education is what brings in the wealth of knowledge and let's you make you opinion of the events that took place. (BTW I wanna be a history teacher, AP US, High School.)

Do you think that the accuracy of the curriculum should be sacrificed to build a passion for learning, or should the material taught be the correct info, because I know that our history as a nation is almost on the level of hitlers for the native americans.

What is your opinions?:confused

A lot of schools exprerss an interest in breeding ignorance, in fact. Many schools and school districs set up a very narrow and specific curriculum that often throws out A LOT of history. A school district I live near planned on getting rid of teaching the American revolution....

I completely disagree with your father as well. The facts should be presented as they are, no sigar coding either. Its totally possible to blend both facts and the love of learning together, this is what I plan to do when I become a history teacher.

Well he was more under the impression that the passion of learning should be pressed more than the accuracy of the information. idk I would like it if my child knew the truth, instead of having to go to a $15,000+ a year college to attain it...

I don't think anything biased should be taught in school, just facts. I also think there should be no place in school for Evolution or religious education which is trying to teach morals instead of facts for this reason.

Well I think its rather useless to stress a passion in learning innaccurate information, wouldn't you agree?

Its sort of impossible to teach modern biology without incorporating the theory of evolution. Especially when it comes to micro evolution, which is fact.

It might be the most likely theory but its not a fact so unless all plausible theories are given consideration, I think the whole thing of where we came from should be kept out of the classroom.

Micro evolution is fact though, thats how your immune system works, it evolves to fight a sickness, for instance. Even religious people agree with microevolution.

Yep, I have no problem with that being taught, I'm talking about big bang theories and us evolving from monkies ect.

I highly suggest getting "1776" by David McCullough. A very good page turner. I don't think a lot of Americans know how bad our situation was during the entire length of the war.

I looked at that when I ended up getting "Lies". I'll admit, it looked a little daunting.
