I guess my issue is that some people don't believe in God at all so it would be wrong to teach anything about God. I understand many worship the same God and my family believes in him. But not all do and I don't believe it right to teach something that can not be proven is there.

History is different there are facts that can prove those things happened. Where as there is so much controvery over if there is really anything that can prove there is a God.

My opinion is it's best to teach anything about religion outside of schools. It's not a hard thing for parents to teach their kids. My kids are learning a little bit about different religions, but its through me because I don't want them to be stuck on a one minded track when it comes to religion, but I also want to keep it separate from their school learnings.

i oppose teaching them buddhism because it goes against the very concept of not having a state sponsored religion. if you want to teach it in private schools, fine, but public schools should be religiously neutral. i'm not against religion in case anyone wants to flame me and think i'm some anti religion person, i'm not. i even like buddhism but in a public school setting it shouldn't be there.

it also isnt fair to other religions who are excluded from this and i oppose it for that reason too.

I think though you guys are both looking at "taught" meaning something different than what I am talking about.

I am not a Christian, but I took this class in college called The Bible as Literature. We basically read the bible - well - the old testament - and studied the meanings of the archetypes, etc. in each of the books.

It was helpful to me later because if some one wants to preach to me and use the old testament, I can come back with my knowledge as well.

I think it would be useful for everyone to understand the differences in religions just as we learn the differences in cultures and other nations.

To better understand why wars start and why politics and relations are so heated, we should understand where the other side is coming from no matter what our side and no matter what the other side.

I am not suggesting that we teach our kids all religions in grade school, but to teach them that other religions exist, and then in high school and college have more courses on the different religions just like we have different classes on the different systems of government.

If you don't teach kids about Islam, they're more likely to go on a website and read about what an evil religion it is...

A lack of education is what spreads intolerance.

I learn about religions like Islam in my world affairs class, but we're not taught to believe it, just the history

im sorry but we have high school grads that can barely fucking read. i'm more concerned about the basics being taught (CORRECTLY) than what you're talking about.

again teaching them about religion in any context should be done outside the school given how dumb students are now.

or that it's honorable to blow yourself up in the name of allah. i get the need to combat ignorance but as i keep saying education of the basics is at rock bottom in this country.

high school grads who can barely read, if at all. i had the reading comprehension of a college freshman in 7th grade and that was well over 2 decades ago. something happened during that time with education and it needs to be undone.

We don't teach any religion, meaning how to pray or things like that, but we do teach about religions in world Geography and World History. How can cultures be explained without considering what for some is the #1 influence on that culture? Without it, too often the result is prejudice, bigotry, and panic at the mere mention of religion ... such as what happens in these religion threads.
