I thought every man owned a multimeter. It's a good way to prevent electrocuting yourself. I suggest you invest in one someday. :p

My computer store has a neat little PSU checker that can tell them as soon as they plug it in if it is bad.

I had one of those a few jobs ago, but it was company equipment so I couldn't take it with me when I left. It was pretty sweet though.

LMAO this is a funny thread too... not because of the problem but how Anathelia explained what was wrong... and the thought of losing "documents" oh the horror....

I've currently got a comp in the same position. Mine is a slightly lesser chip though, an Opteron

I've not bothered looking at it as I use my laptop/netbook so much I don't need to worry about getting that main comp back online. I suspect it will turn out to a mobo problem.

I once had a problem with a comp locking up during gaming - and after trying different video cards - turned out to be the power supply. I won't ever buy a Vantec again though (if they still do power supplies). I put a brand new fairly high powered one in once and it kinda fizzled and went pop. Not that I'm likely to go desktop again. Desktop replacements are just too convenient and space saving.

Sweet... it did indeed turn out to be the motherboard. Up and operational again, just down a processor core for now. :(

I'm not really up on processors to be honest, but how are you down a core? Is one of them bad? Can you turn them on and off? :dunno

No, I had to go from my quad core socket AM2+ CPU to my older tri core AM3 CPU. I couldn't find an AM2+ board that would do what I needed (since they're older technology), but my older processor is an AM3, so I bought an AM3 board. I bought the AM2+ when it was on clearance so I could get an extra core, and I was using an AM2+ board.

It wasn't plugged in, was it?

Say what now?

Ah, that makes sense. :D

I don't understand, you can still buy new quad core socket AM2+ CPU's. Yeah, they are older technology, but they are still available...

I know that... the problem was my motherboard. I couldn't get an AM2+ board with four memory banks, so I couldn't use the AM2+ quad core that I've been using. So I had to get an AM3 board and use the AM3 tri core that's been sitting around after I got the quad core.
