Another study has concluded that people who only watch Fox News are less informed than all other news consumers.

Researchers at Fairleigh Dickinson University updated a study they had conducted in late 2011. That study only sampled respondents from New Jersey, where the university is located. This time, the researchers conducted a nationwide poll.

The poll asked questions about international news (Iran, Egypt, Syria and Greece were included) and domestic affairs (Republican primaries, Congress, unemployment and the Keystone XL pipeline.)

The pollsters found that people were usually able to answer 1.8 out of 4 questions on foreign news, and 1.6 of 5 questions on domestic news, and that people who don't watch any news were able to get 1.22 of the questions on domestic policy right.

As the study explained, though, people who watched only Fox News fared worse:

The largest effect is that of Fox News: all else being equal, someone who watched only Fox News would be expected to answer just 1.04 domestic questions correctly -- a figure which is significantly worse than if they had reported watching no media at all. On the other hand, if they listened only to NPR, they would be expected to answer 1.51 questions correctly; viewers of Sunday morning talk shows fare similarly well. And people watching only The Daily Show with Jon Stewart could answer about 1.42 questions correctly.

Other networks also did badly in some sections; MSNBC viewers and Fox News viewers both fared worse in answering international questions than people who watched no news.

People who only listened to NPR or watched Sunday morning talk shows or "The Daily Show" did the best in the study.

To be fair, people who watch Fox News didn't do much worse than everybody else.

I don't know any particular people who watch Fox News. But I find people in general know jack shit about foreign events.

I dunno - it seems FOX viewers are significantly dumber than the general population. From the study:

The largest effect is that of Fox News: all else being equal, someone who watched only Fox News would be expected to answer just 1.04 domestic questions correctly -- a figure which is significantly worse than if they had reported watching no media at all. I know quite a few FOX viewers. In my admittedly anecdotal observations of friends and relatives that get their news primarily from FOX - they tend to be Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mike Weiner Savage, and Neal Boortz fans as well. They have a severe right leaning view of the world and are closed off completely to any other world view. That's all they need in their minds - and FOX provides it for them.

Suffice it to say this study was no surprise to me.

From the outside looking in, Fox News always struck me as telling it's viewers what it believes they want to hear. That said, I probably only get to see the more eye-opening things that end up on YouTube...

One could also make the assertion that people who watch "The View" are the most clueless idiots.

Crap like this is just divisive.

There is no true news network out there. The all are infotainment.

I personally enjoy listening to NPR when they do a rundown of the headlines because they report on such a wide variety of domestic and foreign topics. If something on Morning Edition or All Things Considered interests me, I'll tune in for a little while longer, but NPR can get annoyingly pundityish too. I can't listen to talk radio for extended periods of time because of it.

I don't watch FNC (or any other infotainment news channel regularly), and I think it's divisive.

Why would the results of a study that confirms what reasonable people already know be considered divisive?

What is the "study" being used for? Oh that's right, for people like you to insult others that don't share your political beliefs... to just flat out call people that watch FNC "stupid". At it's core, that is divisive. Hell, the fact that you decided to say that "reasonable people" already know that people that watch FNC are stupid proves my point beyond anything else.

Oh great source you have there, OP

the Huffington Post.

PS most of the American public are nothing more than monkeys with car keys so what political party you subscribe to doesn't matter in the long run

Where did I defend Fox Johnny?

You are so blinded by your bias it is beyond worth spending the time to debate

All bow to the all knowing Johnny

Poor old Alien Alice got her lil' conservobot feelings hurt again. Yes, Alice, you were defending FOX - that's why you came out all butt-hurt.

You conservobots stand out like a sore monkey - real easy to spot. So one does not need to be all knowing to see the obvious. ;)

I'll flat out state that if you are a FOX believer, you are an ignorant fucking moron. Reasonable people KNOW this. I intended to offend any FOXbot that would take offense to my reply. When you toss a stone into a crowd of FOXbots, the hit bot always hollers. :ninja :p :24:
