Star Trek did make you think, dream and imagine... but so did many other shows. - Honestly most shows make you do those stated above.
I just don't understand the association of how being a 'trekkie' means you're a nerd or geek.

Star trek was 'technical' in that it had bells and whistles and buttons and talk about engineering concepts and physics and the like. To understand these concepts, most people have to have a background in the technical sciences, or at least an interest, and those types of people have long been seen as nerds and geeks. Then you have those folks that want to dress up and act like their favorite characters, which a lot of people think is strange.

But it is a stereotype - I liked the show and I was a long haried, heavy metal, head banger when I was watching it originally.

And BTW - they don't call this forum OffTopicz for nothing. It's rare for us to stay focused here ooooo kitty!

I remember watching the original series on our old black and white RCA TV. Yea, I'm that old.

I recently ripped all the Star Trek Season 1 DVDs and put them on our media server. I have the first 10 movies there too. So, yes I am a geek and damn proud of it.

i have every star trek episode ever made, but i don't consider myself a trekkie. People like my wife hate star trek, even though it spawned ideas for modern stuff like the floppy disk and cell phones and hypo-sprays (thats real too, they used that on me at boot camp)

Just has never resonated with me at all. Loved Star Wars, BSG, lots of other stuff, just no love for Trek.

I am going to give it a go and watch the latest movie hopefully

Star Trek: Why the stereotype?

I have been a fan of the Star Trek universe for many yes, Yes I'll admit that I fall under the label of 'Trekkie' to a degree. What I don't truly understand is how come this series has been struck with such a bad image from people. If you watch these classic shows you are automatically labeled as a geek or a nerd or the sort... I just don't understand why.
Star Wars fans aren't in such a degree, nor is just about any other sci-fi type show.

Any ideas?

Because its shit.
