Star Trek: Why the stereotype?

I have been a fan of the Star Trek universe for many yes, Yes I'll admit that I fall under the label of 'Trekkie' to a degree. What I don't truly understand is how come this series has been struck with such a bad image from people. If you watch these classic shows you are automatically labeled as a geek or a nerd or the sort... I just don't understand why.
Star Wars fans aren't in such a degree, nor is just about any other sci-fi type show.

Any ideas?

Because Star Trek was a show that made you think, dream, imagine... Can't be having that. Best label it's fans 'weird' {picture above doesn't help the cause ;) } and hope it's base is small... Can't be having the Sheeps get all uppity... The Suits don't like that.:D Can you say FireFly?:cool

That was TOS for sure. The movies were more entertainment than anything else. But TNG, Voyager, and Enterprise were all good series IMO.

True, I didn't mean to seem as I was excluding them. Poopa and I enjoyed them all too. Some great characters & story lines in all.

I watched Star Trek, the original series when I was a teen, it only took me two weeks to see the whole thing and I loved it. I don't consider myself a total nerd but I do love being a geek. I also like Star Wars, lol... almost got into Star Gate but whoa.... they did a bunch of seasons!

with the movies you need to watch the extended versions to get anywhere near to the books....but even they miss certain characters out

It's been a while since we've spent a weekend watching them... Time for a marathon!

Tho, I think seeing the movies first will help me to keep all the characters straight and add the new ones I'm unfamiliar with when I do sit down to read them.

We did Star Gate et al too. BSG. Babylon 5.... Liked em all.

Babylon 5 makes me giggle a lot with how dated the graphics and effects are, I do love the story of Marcus Cole... that character is like my ex :24:

Star Trek did make you think, dream and imagine... but so did many other shows. - Honestly most shows make you do those stated above.
I just don't understand the association of how being a 'trekkie' means you're a nerd or geek.
