i'm not for spanking nor beating.. but i think thats the line of work i'm in... i would be fired in an instant if i laid my hand on a kid.. so i've been programmed to think spanking is the devil

no , no kid should get a beating maybe a wake on the butt or a backhand but thats it , bacon got one backhand his whole life for talking back to his mother, if the kids piss me off that bad i'd have no problem braking something they like , tv game phone something like that.

spanking never works. it just makes them want to do it again. every now and then when the boys are acting really bad and pop them on the butt ya know they just laugh it off and keep on with what they are doing. of course they listen to mommy and always daddy


i actually got a few good ones actually alot of them sometimes for no reason other times for bad grades if we got less then a b we were grounded! it didn't help it just pissed me off

We were in Wal Mart sometime last week and Cameron was sitting up front in the shopping cart where he was facing me. I dont remember exactly what it was that he did, but I popped him on the outside of his thigh. This man came walking up to me and asked me what the hell I was doing! I told him that until he pays to raise me child, he has no say so in what I do and to mind his own damn business! Nosy ass people!

I don't think kids should be spanked on a regular basis as they just grow to see it as the norm.

I think if a child has been raised well then simply voicing yourself should be enough.

Only in extreme circumstances should they get a firm spank on the ass, they will fear getting spanked then and will be discouraged from misbehaving.

This is just my opinion... I've never raised a child but it is how I was brought up and I turned out ok.

to be serious, i would not spank either. i was brought up this way, or so i have been told, for i do not remember much of my childhood anymore.

i would simply present the child some choices on how to behave, such as if we were going to the supermarket - "sure, you can have the candy bar, but then that would be your supper.. " or something like that. also, the kid has to be able to understand. if the kid is unable to understand, pick something that they enjoy and take it away from them for a period of time, like 30 to an hour.

no spankings, no time outs. always try to make it seem positive - it will teach your child to make better decisions when growing up.

* of course, i dont have experience in such things. but i know my nephew is scared of spankings ( last time i saw him get one, he got 3 in a row, because he didnt correct what he did wrong, and he stood there screaming... ) if you wish to use spankings as a correction, try not to make it seem like spanking is the object of focus. try to make sure they understand what they did wrong, and that the wrongdoing is what prompted the spanking; not you just being evil

I knew if I fucked up, I got spanked. I tried to not fuck up, so therefore I wouldn't get spanked.

IT IS the consequence, and I didn't want it. Hence why I sat around and did nothing growing up.

Right on! I really think it is no one else's business but your own if you descipline your child in public. As long as you aren't beating the kid senseless anyway. (And my use of "your" and "you" are generalizations and not directed to you Amy)

My take on it is this... as long as it is a quick pop on the clothed butt then I don't think it does any harm. I got more than my fair share of spankings when I was a kid. They usually didn't really work because I would go back to what I was doing wrong within a few minutes anyway. But it did let me know that my parents didn't approve of it.
I remember the worst beating I ever got as a kid though, and it was by my grandma of all people. My brother and I were staying with her for a few weeks during one summer and we were acting up in church. Grandma said she was gonna give us some "medicine" when we got home. We didn't think much of it... until we got home and she told us it was time for our "medicine". She had gone outside and picked a nice little branch off of a small tree. It was thin, very green inside, and was nice and flexible. She made us pull our shirts up and she lit our backs up with that switch! We looked like a couple of white and red zebras when she was done. Needless to say, we never acted up in church again.

If you could start to discipline the child early enough, then treat them with respect you should not need to spank.

When my daughter was very small we wanted to show her the difference between right & wrong, so we left a Video Recorder & a Stereo at floor level where she could get to them. We let her play with the stereo as much as she wanted - yep sometimes the volume was way too loud when you turned it on. Whenever she touched the Video, we would say No firmly - if she did it again we would say No again & tap the back of her hand (a light tap not a smack). Eventually she learned that there were things she could touch & things she couldn't but she also learned that No meant No as we were consistent.

... but I think that there are some kids who are easy to train & some who are not.

I must admit that I do think that the punishment should fit the crime (age to be taken into consideration) & that in most cases this does not involve any hitting.

Ahhh memories! My grandma did the same with me and my 2 cousins too! But she would make us go pick the stick off the tree. We eventually learned that the bigger the stick was, the less it would hurt. One time she chased us around and around her house. But she passed away when she was only 55 from breast cancer, and I would do anything to have her back. She had to be the worlds best grandma ever!!

My dad used to use a wooden paint mixer stick to spank us. One time he missed and tagged me on the back of the knees. My knees swoll up and he never did that again.

My parents have only ever hit me twice.

Once, I guess I deserved it.

The other time I was older, and although I doubt I deserved it, I certainly see where they were coming from.

My parents were good at intimidation and creative punishment, so they rarely needed to hit.

i am against spanking, but all for toughening up a kid mentally and physically to due the right thing. i am more for taking away privileges than physical force, and i will definitely never hit any kid, ever.
