Ok, so I am Agnostic. But if something gives me a feeling of reverence, like I'm part of something which could be spiritual, besides running down a country road with fields, a river, and mountains in the background, it is pictures of the Universe. Is anyone else effected in this manner? It's an emotional reaction based on... ? :)

imo, whether religious or not.......the Universe is something most people hold in awe.
Almost endless possibilities of yet to be discovered unknowns, questions of origin, questions of it's distant future.....questions about those unknowns ( from a scientific context ) and even questions about the unknowable ( from a religious context ).

First 2 look like wallpaper to me.
The last picture appears to be a digital creation.

Another interesting find popped up in NewScientist this morning.

http://www.newscientist.com/article...galaxy-hails-from-mysterious-cosmic-dawn.html

excerpt>

astronomers have uncovered the best contender yet for the most distant known galaxy – an object from which light began travelling towards us 13.2 billion years ago. The find adds a precious piece to the largely unsolved puzzle of what the universe looked like just a few hundred million years after the big bang.

........
Even though we see MACS 1149-JD as it was 490 million years after the big bang, its colour suggests that its stars formed up to 200 million years earlier.
"That means the object was there in a primitive form when the universe was only 300 million years old," says Ellis.

I cant help but wonder what all is out there...We are just a speck in the universe ...Who is the only one with the correct balance to sustain life?
IMO the chance of that would be pretty slim..but how does one speck find another speck, that may be so far off that just the simplest communication could take thousands of years to receive.

The universe is a marvel. To think looking up in the sky each distant star is another galaxy. (Visible planets not included obviously)

Play with the Drake Equation if you have not all ready. There are other Drake Equation sites some easier or harder to figure out what you want to enter. You might be surprised how many there could be.

If you guys ever want to see some neat stuff, look at the Hubble Telescope Web Site..

http://hubblesite.org/

This is where my pics came from. I have bunches of these as cycling wallpaper on my Mac.

Truly awe inspiring. Makes you feel small, but you know you are part of it all. You, at the least the physical part of you, came from and will return to it. :)

I have no idea how to come up with the figures that would match those calculations....how do we know life/intelligence fractions etc

Same here.

And relatively recent concepts of dark energy, the increasing rate of expansion of the universe and time dilation/relativity are fascinating new elements for me. Astrophysics and cosmology has come a long way since I was young.

When I was a youngster I also had alot of interest..I still do to an extent..I guess however what had my curiosity as a child will not be revealed in my lifetime.
Whats out there.
And how did it get there.
Where is other life.
Does other life know we are here.
Can that be a threat
