here we get birth control for free..

and again id like to point out what i already said.. that i did not say transgenders should have to pay for surgery, i said that ppl having IVF should also have it free.. for so many attempts anyway.. obv im not suggesting that they should be allowed time after time.

I wasn't saying you weren't...just interjecting a point as to why they may not fund it. I actually agree that they both should be covered.

I'm sure the Catholics are not happy with free birth control. I tend to agree on the IVF issue three strikes and your out sounds reasonable. Seems a lot of time elective surgeries (ie...non-life threatening) are covered where some procedures aren't. I know eventually we will end up with some kind of socialized medicine in the US as well I just don't think it is the best idea for the best care of everyone.

Reminds me of this mentally unstable dude that passed away a few years back, he was getting help from the state and national government obviously but was taking hormone pills which in turn made him grow breasts. The dude was way whacked.

I have also heard of women getting breast enlargements on the NHS, seems if your doctor will say having small breasts is causing you mental issues you can get it paid for???
Not sure of all the facts, I read it in a magazine somewhere.

We are supposed to have a free healthcare system in Ireland but it's a joke

FYI, being transgender is not just cosmetic.

well thats true but the same could be said about the desire for children...i understand the psychological ramifications but if it doesn't immediatly affect the health and safety of the patient and is done as a way to effect changes of a physical nature than it is cosmetic...

websters defines
Cosmetic Procedures:Medical or surgical procedures which are intended to improve the appearance of any portion of the body and from which no improvement in physiologic function can be expected.

I have no issue with the idea that transgender people are to be taken seriously and I fully respect the gay lesbian bisexual and transgender community...but if i wanted to get lipo because my spare tire was causing me emotional distress i don't believe that i should get a national insurance policy to cover that out of taxpayers money!

Rob, I'm not trying to argue with you but you are arguing apples and oranges. Getting a tummy tuck is not in the same league as being trangender unless of course you weigh 500 lbs and then they would not be handling it that way.

I appreciate the seriousness of the emotional/psychological issues that a transgender person has to deal with. However, I don't think that it constitutes getting taxpayer dollars for the sex-change surgery. That was the point i was making. I was trying to belittle anyones experiences...

I am also not trying to be argumentative, simply wanted to make my position a little clearer. You have to understand where I come from. I am a HUGE supporter of the Gay, Lesbian, Bi, and Transgender community. I took my teen brother (who is gay) in from his previous living conditions (partially) to keep him from being accosted by his stepfather who disagrees with his lifstyle. I am fully supportive of equal rights for Gay Couples including marriage rights!
I just don't agree with the government paying for surgery for Transgender people...if their private insurance wants to pay, then full steam ahead! On a national health care plan, however, it shouldn't be!

Fair enough. You brought up lipo. What if someone weighed 500 lb and their health was deteriorating, or was projected to deteriorate? Would that qualify for medical coverage? I realize it all boils down to perspective about what should and should not be covered. There are people who would say, that is gluttony and they don't deserve coverage. I think if it gets that far then there is something going on not unlike being an alcoholic. The individual is unable to handle it, it is life threatening, so would that qualify for coverage? I think it would. As far as trangender, it someone is stuck in the wrong gender body, you could be looking at serious depression. It's a health issue IMO. :)

I can take that point...You're right that it becomes an emotional/mental well being issue at this point...i can concede to that argument. :surrender

I tend to agree with you. I think nationalized healthcare is a joke. Of course that is a different debate. My opinion gender re-assignment sounds like elective surgery so why not allow IVF as well.

Seems to be a common feeling for those who live in countries with national healthcare... remind me why people in the US think this is a good idea?
