You're clinging to your definition of "ruling" as being about enacting laws and such. In my definition "ruling" means the desire or ability to control people. Hence "Ruling through fear - isn't that the very ESSENCE of religion?"
Actually I'm trying very hard to cling to the essence of this thread. The stoning was sanctioned by an Islamic court which I assume would be part of a so called gov't body in that particular region of Somalia.

a while ago i saw a pretty fuckin sick video from some third world country about a man that was caught stealing and then he ran from the "police" (read militia). it said his punishment for stealing and running was to cut off his right hand and left foot at the same time. no anastetics, booze, not even a big rock to the head, just cut his hand and foot off. I have seen some shit, but i almost threw up! Some of these places are so g*d-damned barbaric!

And since it's in the "religion" forum and not the "politics" forum I assumed it was OK to comment about religion independently of government.

They do have the power to convince, brainwash and inimidate but they do not have the authority to enact laws as they did in days of old, the Pope included

I will also say that while the don't "officially have that power, they do have the power and political influence to enact laws on many levels based solely on relgious beliefs. My state's ban on Sunday alcohol sales is a prime example. The wealthiest and most powerful churches operate very powerful lobbying groups who frequently strong arm religious-based legislation into law. So while the church may not make the laws themselves, they are still very much involved in the process of "ruling".

At some point, people are going to have to face their own humanity and say "enough" of this bullshit and fight to eradicate it. It won't be in our lifetime, but it's something that is inevitable.

The fact that "Christianity" hasn't made this their central cause worldwide is one key reason that I have, and will, never participate in what I believe to be an institution that is completely full of shit.

It's OK as far as I'm concerned. I was devoting my attention to the thread itself not the sub-forum title. People start threads in the wrong forums all the time. No biggie.

Agreed.

It's a form of execution, albeit a long drawn out one. It also send a very strong message to those around them me thinks.

About 10 years ago someone sent me a link to a video that showed a man on the ground with a rope tied to each limb. He was being stretched in a star shape by a man at the end of each rope as he laid on the ground. Another man with a turban on his head ( I mention that only to give you an idea of location ) had a small knife in one hand and held the limb with his free hand. With the knife he started to cut off one hand. At that instant I got the hell out of that video and can only assume that he cut off all appendages. It is one of those images that has been burned into my memory and I wish I never saw the start of it. It makes me sick just thinking about it.

As someone mentioned I doubt that shit will ever be eradicated in our lifetime. How do you convince or educate someone that doesn't have the desire to believe in anything other that what they have been taught over the ages. In their minds eye they know they are right.

Edit: Thread officially hijacked by many.....

The saddest thing is that there are some people in the US that say we need to be nicer to these people and protect their feelings..

is the antithesis of religion, religion of any shape or form seeks to unite through love and Harmony, is the evil of man that perverts the doctrine to spread fear - no deity seeks death

:24:
Then maybe they should actually start DOING that instead of torturing and murdering people for not conforming to their standards and beliefs like they've done for a few milleniums. More people have been killed in the name of religion than anything else - by far.

One of my favorite quotes of all time:

There's just enough religion in the world to make people hate each other, and not enough to make them love each other.

sharia law is perverted to suit the needs of the evil, this court that convicted the adulterer serves not The prophet moreover it serves satan

I wasn't talking about Sharia. I was talking about Christianity. You know, the religion whose body count far exceeds all others?
