Now, for me... If someone asks what I want to drink, I will say what it is, like Mt. Dew or Sprite. But it's Soda around here...

Think about it, when you go to a fast food restaurant, they have soda fountains, not pop fountains or coke fountains. :dunno

Go to google images and type in soda fountain, you will see hundreds of pictures. Now type in Pop fountain.... not 1 picture of a "pop" dispenser.

Hmmm, just was thinking about this a bit more. I know I said I just call them by whatever brand they are but I suppose if I had to refer to many varieties collectively I'd just call them fizzy drinks so my vote still goes with others. Oh and the think Tim put a picture up of we call a drinks dispenser.

It's Coke here :D

Coke is just a brand. Such as Pepsi is another brand. Dr Pepper is another brand etc etc.

The category or generic term used for those kind of products are referred to as soda or soft drink or pop depending on where you are.

Negative, ghostrider.

Here, in the South, Coke can refer to any brand of soda.

That's real strange. But then again I remember when we used to call certain generic category of products by brand name too. Was racking my brain to remember what it was. I think it was dressing strips (for wounds). Think we used to call any type of dressing stips we wanted as "BAND AID". When in truth BAND AID is just a brand. But it was so popular we used to refer to it as that.

same here. if i need an a adhesive patch i just say band aid. if i need a tissue ill say kleenex. if i need a cotton swab ill just say Q tip. all brand names but ill call it that and everyone knows what im talking about.

but like tim said to the southeners. if you want a a diet sprite. why would you call it a coke. to me Coke is just that. Coca cola. Diet sprite is totally different.

you damn southeners confuse the hell out of me

It was pop while I was growing up in Michigan and soda down in NC. Its a midwest thing to call it pop. Who cares what you call it as long as you call it the right thing in the right place? ;) Here's another one...How do you pronounce pecan? Some say pee-can, others say pacon. You say po-tato, I say pa-tato.
