the reconciliation was done behind closed doors by the democrats in the house as the selling tool for the main bill.

without the reconciliation there was no way the house was gonna pass the main bill.

The reconciliation bill was a completely separate bill. It had nothing to do with the health care bill that was signed into law. It was a bill created to "fix" the problems with the health care bill, but it in no way changed the health care bill. The health care bill that was passed in the senate HAD to be passed without making a single change, because if they changed even one comma in the bill, it would have to go back to the senate after the house passed it. Then it could be blocked or held up and never become law. So the democrats decided to pass the bill without a single change so it would go right to the president for signing. But since they didn't like several things in it, they created another bill to fix those things. But the Senate needs to either pass it word for word for the president to sign into law, or they will amend it and send it back to the house for their approval. A bill never makes it to the president until both houses agree on every single change and amendment.

So whether the reconciliation bill was done in the dark of night or not, it doesn't matter. Because it's public record now, and it will be during the entire senate debate on it.... go read it, it's only 187 pages.

I know I'm not up on my politics but there seems to be something wrong here

No, that's exactly right.

Let me spell this out for you... a few points that aren't made in the school house rock video.

A bill must start out in the house of representatives. It's all hashed out in committee and then goes to the floor for a vote. If passed it goes to the senate. They can vote on it as written (no changes at all) and send it to the president to be signed into law, or he may veto it. If he vetos the bill, it gets sent back to congress where it either dies or they can over ride the veto making it a law with a super majority vote.
If the senate takes gets a bill from the house and wants to make changes to it, they can amend the bill. But if they amend it, it MUST go back to the house so they can approve or deny the changes (amendments) If they approve it as amended in the senate, then it goes to the president for signing.

Well the health reform bill went from the house to the senate. The senate basically rewrote the bill into their own version. At this point the house would merge the two bills and send the merged version back to the senate for their approval. This is all done in committee. Then the senate would kill it or send it to the president to be signed.
But the house decided to just take the senate bill and pass it as is, that means no changes what so ever. And since both houses of congress voted on and passed the same bill, it goes to the president for signing.

Now if the republicans weren't trying to kill this bill or hold it up through procedure, the preferred method would have been to merge the house bill and the senate bill and send it back to the senate for a final vote. But they didn't want to risk having it killed in the senate, so they held their noses and voted the senate bill through.

This is how bills become law.

Here's to hoping that the GOP gets control of the House and refuses to fund the legislation.

A. The GOP will not take control of the house or the senate come November. The democrats will remain in power. Bookmark the post until after the elections so I can say I told you so.
B. The republicans wouldn't have the balls to repeal this law or not fund it.

If the republicans try to kill this law, they will suffer crushing defeats come November.

Hell, congress is starting to deal with wall street right now and the republicans are going to do everything in their power to stop that. The American people are going to vote these republicans out of office... trust me, they are going to lose big come November if they don't start working.

you're freaking hilarious. There will be severe repercussions for passing this legislation against the will of the people. Hell, in the incredibly liberal state of California where I live, a 3 term senator, Barbara Boxer is running in a dead heat with her perspective GOP challengers.

We'll just have to see how the next few months play out.

That's what's really cool about OTZ. How many forums have their very own resident democrat apologist? :)

Where do you see me apologizing for anything... nope, not in my nature.

The rule clearly states that you never need to apologize when you're never wrong.
