So i'm watching The Haunted and I know it's on Animal Planet but I still can't help but facepalm over what this couple just said.

The start of this new story they were introducing the couple. This woman explains that at 28 years old she found out she couldn't have children. Then the husband starts talking he said "well if we can't have children the next best thing is our animals"....

NO genius.... The next best thing is adoption.

Could you adopt if you found out you couldn't give birth?

I see where Dana is coming from. He's saying that it sounded like the couple were saying pets are equal to humans.
Which I agree the next best thing would be adoption. But like the others said, not everyone can afford it

I just googled and if you didn't try and adopt a poster child (a baby, or a white child, or something) it can cost no money or just a few thousand.

Adopting from the U.S. foster care system is generally the least expensive type of adoption, usually involving little or no cost, and states often provide subsidies to adoptive parents. Stepparent and kinship adoptions are often not very costly. Agency and private adoptions can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more depending on a variety of factors including services provided, travel expenses, birthmother expenses, requirements in the state, and other factors. International adoptions can range from $7,000 to $30,000.

While there may be a small fee required up front, any requirement that all fees be paid immediately following application should raise red flags. When talking with your professional, ask about the payment schedule, and about sliding scale fees if your financial resources are limited.

There are a growing number of resources to help manage the cost of adoption, including tax benefits (some of which apply to public agency adoptions as well), loans, employer benefits, and others.

I always thought that if I couldn't have children for some reason, that I would adopt a child. I feel bad for all those kids out there that have to grow up in the system.

@AUDRAA- wanna talk about stress? My puppy is driving me nuts right now! So much energy, we go to the dog park twice a day.

lol a poster child? I'd like one with no baggage if I ever were to adopt with a SO (disabilities, illnesses, etc. are too much, i know what my mother went through with me and it sucks)

Well most likely kids of other races and/or kids who were traumatized when they were younger. Basically kids who might not think of you as their real parents. (not babies who can't remember)

They couldn't save up for 9 months?

And like it said in the quote, there are special loans and government programs to help people afford it.

It would take us a lot longer than 9 months to save up to adopt a child (probably even with governmental programs) but we could go and get a dog right now. Perhaps in their disappointment over not being able to have their own children, they decided a pet would be a better choice for them at this point.
