Okay, this may need a tiny bit of backstory:
I grew up in a very, very small town. There are virtually no minorities except for one black family, and then my mother and myself (who has the lovely label of "spick", and later I ended up with the "faggot" label as well). In that town, everyone knows everyone's business, but it's generally the rule not to get involved. Still, sometimes a father who beats his wife and kids will show up in the morning with the shit kicked out of him. That's "how it goes", apparently.
A few nights ago, the little brother of a boy I went to school with went missing. A few nights before that, an older (openly gay) man went missing too. The older guy had been taking the boy out, and even though no one ever mentioned anything sexual happening, a bunch of teenage boys in town assumed there was. They went after the man, beat him to death, tossed his body. A few days later, they beat the boy to death too because he was now suspected to be gay.
Both bodies were found, and I hate to say it: I doubt the boys who did it are going to get a heavy sentence. I know the sort of environment in the town, and it isn't exactly favoring the deceased in this case.
I'm really freaked out by the whole thing. I knew both of the people who died, I know the boys who did it, and it's scary to think that I could've ended up with a similar fate at some point. It's just so not right.
