Sloppy Joes

I love sloppy joes but have always made them the simple way, you know, brown the meat and pour a can of Manwich over the meat. But last night at work, someone made a ton of sloppy joes and brought it to work and they were the best sloppy joes I have EVER had! I had him write the recipe down for me so I can try to make them soon. It doesnt look all that hard either. It was wonderful!
Here's the recipe he gave me:
1 lb. ground beef
1 cup minced real onion
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
1 tablesoon shortening
1 cup green pepper, finely chopped
2 tablespoons prepared mustard
1 cup catsup or chili sauce
1 tablespoon vinegar

Brown meat slowly until meat is crumbly, but, soft. Drain grease off. Combine remaining ingredients with meat. Cover skillet and simmer slowly for 35 or 30 minutes. Makes 4-5 cups of filling. Serve on sandwich buns. You can melt slices of cheese on top of mixture too if you want.
 
Oh, I like 'em. I usually put onions, green peppers and some chiles in it.

The sugar is in the recipe as a balance for the other strong ingredient flavors. A lot of recipes have a counter flavor for balance. Even chocolate chip cookie recipes have salt as one of the ingredients. That doesn't seem to make sense, but they still taste yummy. :)
