(CNN) -- A new study finds that lack of sleep due to shift work is causing irreversible brain damage.

Research published in the Journal of Neuroscience details the concerning news for people who work outside of normal work hours, like truck drivers or doctors on the graveyard shift.

It found that the long-term sleep deprivation suffered by people working these hours takes power away from the brain, even if you are able to catch up on sleep, and kills brain cells.

The bundle of nerves in the brain, which is associated with alertness and cognitive function, had lots of damage.

The potential end goal is to develop a medicine that could help people cope with odd work hours.

Chronic sleep loss can harm brain health. Studies show it affects memory, mood, and even increases the risk of conditions like Alzheimer’s. I’ve felt mentally foggy and less focused after poor sleep, rest is vital for brain repair and long-term function.

Just like your body, your brain also needs rest and sleeping is the best way to give rest to your brain. When you sleep, your body goes into repair mode, cells will start repairing itself or generating newer cells. If you restrict yourself from sleep, your body and brain will stop healing.
