So I have been battling illness since Dec. 18. on the 19th I went to the dr, because i knew i couldnt miss much work and I wanted to get rid of whatever it was ASAP. The dr i went to wasn't my normal dr, he wasn't in that day. This guy didn't really act like he cared much about me nd he just wanted to get me in and out as fast as possible. He did a strep test which was neg, and He gave me some Viscous Lidocaine solution...basically like a clear gel that you are supposed to gargle...but it made me puke everytime i tried it so i gave up on it. I was sick for 7 days. then I still had a cough hanging over into the next week, but i felt pretty much mostly better. Right when I started feeling better, matt started feeling sick. His came on a little slower than mine, but i just figured he got the same thing i had. Then, on NYE, after I had been almost better for a week, I started feeling like total and utter shit. The next night I felt so bad, and thats also around the time matt started feeling his worse also....so we both went to the ER, it was late and no Dr's were open that day anyway. The ER said Matt most likely had strep, but they did no test. They also thought I had strep, but I told them my test was negative. They gave him a steroid shot to help with swelling and also gave him some hydrocodones for the pain and a Z pack. For me they prescribed Augmentin (antibiotic), Zyrtec-D and Flonase (that stuff is magical). I got the Augmentin and Zyrtec but due to an insurance mix-up I didn't get the Flonase until today. This morning I went back to my regular dr to get a mono test done, and my doctor also gave me some prednisone and hydrocodone. He thinks I have mono, but I am still waiting on the blood test. Matt was unable to get to the Dr today, so we ended up taking him back to urgent care tonight. They basically put him on the exact same meds as me and gave him another steriod shot...his tonsils were so big he could hardly breathe and couldn't swallow at all. Although they did do a strep test on him and it was positive, so I am still not convinced that I don't have strep also. I don't know if I even have the same thing as I had before, but it feels exactly the same..only a little more miserable. Anyways. Yeah. Just felt like bitching and maybe someone here still cares :-p
 
Good Lord you guys have been sick for a long time - going back and forth and it sounds like the doctors can't it straight, not to mention all this went down over the holidays so I'm sure many places were short handed. I hope you guys get to the bottom of this soon and are feeling better.
 
Either mono or strep would make you feel that bad. I'm sorry. I hope your test results come back quickly so they can make sure you're being treated properly.
 
I don't really know how I could have gotten mono. It's just the fact that I have been given antibiotics and they haven't helped much, and I've been sick for so long...I also had some sharp pains in my stomach, which could be my spleen. Strep and mono have similar symptoms so they wanted to at least test for it. No I haven't been kissing other boys...there are other ways you can get it though. Sometimes I drink after friends...I don't know anyone who has had it lately, but I also quit smoking like a week before I got sick, that weakens your immune system a lot I heard. I also heard that if you have ever had mono then you are a carrier for it. Matt has had it before so he is a carrier, I just don't know how I randomly got it from him. Who knows : / I'm going to start using antibacterial instant hand sanitizer like every 20 mins at work now. Money is soooo dirty and I touch it every day. Who knows what kind of germs there are on those stinky 100 dollar bills. ewww. Thanks for the well wishes. I have a feeling I am on the upswing now, but I usually feel better at night and then crappy in the morning so we will see how tomorrow morning goes.
 
You can get mononucleosis through direct contact with infected saliva - sharing a straw or an eating utensil can expose you to the virus. Another common way to catch mono is by kissing someone who's infected (which is how the illness got its nickname as the “kissing disease”).

Here is my train of thought concerning this...customer with mono comes to bank, and happens to sneeze and get snot or saliva on their money or my pen, or whatever...i don't notice and pick up my pen or the money, then later i rub my nose (I've had the sneezies/allergy nose itchies all winter) and contract the disease. I'm thinking something really random and untraceable like that happened. A bunch of people at work hav ebeen sick but mostly just with the flu and they've all been better within 3-4 days.
 
ewwwwww. omg...that just reminded me...theres this NASTY lady that comes to the bank..her name is Miss Juanita and she ALWAYS comes to me because Ia m very polite to her because i kind of feel bad for her...she has some disease or something and gets SS checks and stuff..and she ALWAYS smells like...BAD b.o.!!! REALLY bad. All the other tellers are kind of rude to her because they don't like her coming to their windows! Anyway she will alwyas hand me a bag full of change to count and trade in for dollars...and its not ever a new bag, its the SAME gross yellowed greasy ziploc every time. I always use antibacterial soap right after she comes though and i spray febreze everywhere. She is just so dirty. Actually, come to think of it...probably 50% of our customer base are people who don't take baths everyday. My bank is sort of near the ghetto and we have people who ride the bus to the bank and who are on welfare and stuff and some of them don't really keep themselves very clean all the time :(

ive also been sick too. ive been sick since monday/tuesday. ive got sore throat, running nose, sneezing, achy all over and no energy at all. came home from work sick on thursday and im calling in today. this sucks!

You really have had it tough huh? :(

Yeah, smoking knocks your immune system right down, but since I packed up smoking a few years ago now, I have got less and less ill - after the first couple of years have gone by, the immune system picked up for me.

I was stupid smoking with resp probs anyway, but that's another story, too long for here and now anyway.

Anyway, make sure they do test you for Mono' then, because you really do need the proper treatment for that.

If Matt's a carrier of it though, then it is even possible you picked it up from kissing him, sharing a glass, etc, maybe?

It's a long time for you to be feeling so ill though, so make sure you get the proper tests and all, ok?

Do her and yourself a favor, Take a brand new clean baggie to work with you, keep it in your cube. Next time she comes in with her ickie bag say something like, 'This bag is about shot and I think the seams are ripping open, here's a new bag for you.' And smile like she's your grammie. Hopefully, she'll be thrilled with the new baggie and you wont have to handle the ickie one anymore.

haha i will have to try that thing and give her a new freaking bag! I know the new one will get disgusting also. This lady is just a walking germ. Thanks for the soop :-p i have been eating tons fo that lately. Well not tons...but when my appetite picks up thats what i eat. Today has been 10 times better than the past week. I think I'm finally getting better! And no mono test result yet :( ugh. That means I'm back to work monday, and if I do find out its pos then i know my job will be fucking pissed if i have to ask off more days. I think I am getting better though. I will just sit on a stool when i go back to work, i hav ebeen getting winded very easily lately.
