Yep...then the powers that be can take names NOT on the electoral roll, and use them for their own votes....

Pete, if your brother had tried to get out of the fine he would have, and Merion is right. Lots just walk into the polling booth and put there empty, unmarked ballot paper in the box, or mark one to ten down the page.

I'm not in favor of compulsory voting but have heard interesting arguments for it.

One interesting point that has been made is that voting is not only a right but a civil duty, similar to jury duty and conscription.
