Hahahaha yeah. What's he gonna say? His only way out of that would be to say that the church does not condone such actions, and turn the diddlers over to the authorities for punishment. Even then, who's to say he didn't do it in his younger days?

The pain of being molested as a child?... that doesn't seem like an I'm sorry would cut it... or even begin to help. That's like a bandaid for a severed head...

i dont suggest that his apology is the end of it, just that to date there are loads of accusations that he knew of the abuse and for the "greater good of the church" tried to keep it quiet, i fully understand why he would have made that choice back in the 70s or 80s, I dont agree that it was the right thing to do, but if he has now been caught out he needs to start addressing it, to date silence

Hey, he's not just some guy - this is the representative of God!
I have to admit though, I'm a renaissance kind of guy, I don't think we should go around molesting kids anymore. And as such, I have to give up religion. :(

It's cases like these that made me give up religion... of any kind. It puts these expectations on humans to be DECENT. And some of us just can't do it... and if the "holiest" of us commits travesties like this then the rest of us are screwed. So many happier, better, more accepting things to focus on and take part in.

No, the pope should not be arrested. That would be retarded. He is not responsible for the conduct of other people.

If you want to arrest a real criminal, throw Obama in the slammer.

Should the Pope be arrested? In a word? Yes.

Along w/every person that helped cover this shit up and those 'men of the cloth' involved in molesting these kids.

Since it's doubtful that's going to happen, it would be nice to see every practicing Catholic withhold their tithes until those responsible are held accountable. That that hasn't happened (at least not made the news), imho, shows support for their actions.

The Catholic Church understands Money. Take their income away and perhaps change will occur?

Excuse me if I don't hold my breath.

What is sad is I'm sure there are decent Priests out there and this mess taints every one of them.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that poll is a little skewed by the likes of Anonymous.

The underlying debate could be argued very well by both sides, sure, the pope doesnt control the actions of other people, but he also had the ability to take the priests who were convicted of these crimes and look into them, instead of just move them to another church.

The mind numb robots who practice Catholicism should demand he resign in shame.

I would not waste time arresting him but it would be nice to see somebody in the Catholic Church who condoned this crap be held accountable

You're right he shouldn't be arrested...he should have his dick cut off with the rest of the priests that he protected.

Go Dawkins!:D

From The Sunday Times

April 11, 2010
Richard Dawkins calls for arrest of Pope Benedict XVI

RICHARD DAWKINS, the atheist campaigner, is planning a legal ambush to have the Pope arrested during his state visit to Britain “for crimes against humanity”.
Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, the atheist author, have asked human rights lawyers to produce a case for charging Pope Benedict XVI over his alleged cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic church.
The pair believe they can exploit the same legal principle used to arrest Augusto Pinochet, the late Chilean dictator, when he visited Britain in 1998.
The Pope was embroiled in new controversy this weekend over a letter he signed arguing that the “good of the universal church” should be considered against the defrocking of an American priest who committed sex offences against two boys. It was dated 1985, when he was in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which deals with sex abuse cases.

Benedict will be in Britain between September 16 and 19, visiting London, Glasgow and Coventry, where he will beatify Cardinal John Henry Newman, the 19th-century theologian.
Dawkins and Hitchens believe the Pope would be unable to claim diplomatic immunity from arrest because, although his tour is categorised as a state visit, he is not the head of a state recognised by the United Nations.
They have commissioned the barrister Geoffrey Robertson and Mark Stephens, a solicitor, to present a justification for legal action.
The lawyers believe they can ask the Crown Prosecution Service to initiate criminal proceedings against the Pope, launch their own civil action against him or refer his case to the International Criminal Court.
Dawkins, author of The God Delusion, said: “This is a man whose first instinct when his priests are caught with their pants down is to cover up the scandal and damn the young victims to silence.”
Hitchens, author of God Is Not Great, said: “This man is not above or outside the law. The institutionalised concealment of child rape is a crime under any law and demands not private ceremonies of repentance or church-funded payoffs, but justice and punishment."
Last year pro-Palestinian activists persuaded a British judge to issue an arrest warrant for Tzipi Livni, the Israeli politician, for offences allegedly committed during the 2008-09 conflict in Gaza. The warrant was withdrawn after Livni cancelled her planned trip to the UK.
“There is every possibility of legal action against the Pope occurring,” said Stephens. “Geoffrey and I have both come to the view that the Vatican is not actually a state in international law. It is not recognised by the UN, it does not have borders that are policed and its relations are not of a full diplomatic nature.”
