I am far more liberal than you think.

I want all drugs legalized
I want prostitution legalized
Just to name a couple of issues

And I can not stand the friggin christian conservatives and what they have done to the republican party. :thumbdown

I can't understand your viewpoint with the burqa then... if you're all for freedom and liberty, why are you supporting discrimination against someone based on what they choose to wear?

I'm on the fence. I don't think we can tell someone not to wear something if they choose to do so willingly - not all women are forced to wear burqas after all. But I can see why people don't like it. There are enough problems with immigrants resisting integration, having them wear clothing that means you can't even tell who you're talking to doesn't help.

I don't like the fact that people come to other countries, supposedly to live and work and become part of the community, and then do their level best to say segregated. This type of clothing literally separates you from everyone around you. I don't think it should be illegal, but that doesn't mean I agree with it's use in western countries either.

The burka is oppressive to women. But the west is not innocent of oppression. Take the modeling industry. Models are encouraged to starve themselves. The industry says, "we're not forcing anyone to starve them self." But I don't think outlawing burkas or diets is the answer. If society were to shun half-starved women and women in burkas then both practices would stop.

Edit: Actually, I meant shun magazines with half-starved women and the husbands of women in burkas.

I never said I was consistent :D

Lets face it there is more than the Burqa going over there. The French feel a threat to their culture which I think is real.

The flip side of this for those who say let them have their way and then scorn them publicly is that then those who do that become the bad guys.

Better to make them conform to societal standards. IMO

If the French banned everything they felt was a threat to their culture their'd be no language other than French, no food other than snails, no hats other than berets, no Eiffel tower, no Louvre, and no Versailles palace...

They've long been completely paranoid that the world is out to destroy French culture...
