Banning the bible would only succeed in a stonger following for it's content. Banning very rarely works - prohibition, porn on the internet, drugs in just about every country - banning usually only pushes things underground & results in more chaos. Thoughts such as "The government said it is bad, so it must be good" abound.

In my opinion the way to diffuse the negative effects of something like the Bible is to open up debate on its content. By limiting debate on it's content that is how the church ensures it maintains its mystical powers.

Showing that the Old Testament is historically inaccurate & that most of the stories have been borrowed from earlier cultures & are about different events. That is the way to ensure that in the long term, people become more aware of it's content & better education at least allows for more open minds.

How can someone elses moral system offend you though?

I found this comment very funny, & while I agree with Peter's response, I would just like to point out another reason, or two, why the Bible may be one of the most dangerous books on the planet - the Inquisition, the Crusades.

Don't get me wrong, in this example the Koran is just as bad.

The communist manifesto is the most offensive book in the history of the world. It clamors for public ownership of the mind, via taking it from the intelligence by force, and that offends people who can understand that. And those that understand why they are offended by it are going to be most offended. But should it be banned?

The Bible should not be banned. Nothing should be banned. Only porn & guns from young kids, and super-drugs from adults. There are probably a few other things, but I covered the basics.
You've obviously haven't read much "offensive" literature if you think the manifesto is the worst.

Plus: All of the things you stated aren't true. Have you even read it?

anyone who thinks the Bible should be banned is a complete fucking idiot. if the bible is banned, then every other piece of religious literature needs to be banned as well.

STFU already, you angry little shit. These are the kinds of comments that turned this section into a war zone, complete with infractions and bans.

You don't get offended by other peoples morality? Neo nazis don't offend you for instance?

Nope.. No ones morale's offend me at all.. When they push them on me or other people that don't want it, that action offends me.

Neo nazi can hate whoever they want.. Doesn't bother me, until they act on it.

See your point, words can be offensive as well as actions though. Religion has a long history of pushing its morals on others.

...in your opinion, people who follow certain teachings in the Bible imo also are showing a lack of morals.

That's because you ar ebitter towards christians because of houw you were treated/raised. Not all religions treat their members like dirt like the JW cult does.

I'm Baptist and we don't push our religion on anyone .. unless they come to church .. and then all our preacher does is preach and ask if they'd like to become a member. No one kicks anyone out for anything .. you're never asked to leave or harrassed to come. People are just happy to see you when you walk through the door.

They don't think you should have sex before you're married (they think that should be saved for your husband or wife for the first time).

They don't think you should be out drinking and carousing .. since it's bad for you.

And they think you should come to church to listen to preaching and hang out with fellow christians .. no one goes door to door, no one calls anyone .. it's just a religion where people can join in and worship God if they so choose.

They will, however, pray for you when you don't shwo up for church. I really don't see how that's offensive.

I wouldn't say they lacked them at all. They had morals, just not yours or mine. Well, we probably do share some basic morals with them, actually.

I highly doubt they share the same moral beliefs I do.

Depends on what morals you are talking about. They thought it was moral to be patriotic, I don't doubt many Americans will disagree with that one.

Some peoples view on being "patriotic" is quite different than the original meaning of the term. I'm sure the terrorist who blow themselves up are being "patriotic" to their countries as well. I don't find that to be a very good comparision.

Actually I wasn't talking about any religion in particular, I was referring to offensive things written in the bible. What the Bible says and what Christians believe vary widely.
