I don't think--to an extent--morals should be taught by anyone. We force our opinions on our kids WAY too much, and it leaves them very closed-minded. You should expose them to things, like give them a bible and take them to church a few times, but don't force them to church if they don't want to go. I think 'teaching' a child morals, is like picking what kind of person they are going to be, and for them to turn out well, that is something they should choose themselves.

I say yes, because a lot of parents these days, lets face it, don't teach them good morals, ethics, right or wrong, or give them basic common sense.

I also think they need to give the teachers the right to discipline the children in their care like when my parents went to school.

I'm torn. I think a lot of morals should be taught by the parents...but then again a lot of morals are also taught while you're in school growing up without you even realizing it. But I did say 'no', that morals shouldn't be taught in school...at least the big ones.

I like the way she put this, and I agree:thumbup SOOOO:

:homo: applies:D

Teaching ethics is ok. Morals should be established before high school. Your childrens morals are set more by how they see their parents live than what the parents try to teach.

Just thought I'd start this debate leading on for another thread. I personally hold the view that morals should be taught by the parents. As you get older you get to make your own mind up about things anyway. I know that if I had kids I wouldn't want them to be taught how to lead their life by a stranger in a school. The schools are failing at their job of teaching educational skills as well so maybe they should stick to teaching maths and english ect and leave the morals to the parents.
in the past i would have agreed with you, but the children today are more and more bringing themselves up with each generation having less proper parenting done.

I think parents like myself are a rare breed now a days.... there are far too many unconscious parents out there. I'm one of the few who'd like to see the strap brought back into the school.

The morals in a lot of households today aren't what they used to be and the more religion is forced out of schools the more it was bound to happen, and i say that NOT liking religion in schools....but at least it taught children not to lie, steal or hurt one another. Now a days you have The good citizen list on how to be a good citizen in your school. Its 'good' but it for the most part doesn't work because no fear or repercussion enough is placed as a deterrent. MOst of the little shits who would break these moral codes don't have respect for authority to begin with...and where do they learn that? At home.

Its got to come from everyone.... it takes a village.

The issue today is we have too much gray and not enough clear cut black and white going on for what is right and what is wrong. All the bloody do gooding hippy scums have ruined the line of what is considered moral and what is not.

Morals should definitely be taught by parents but there is nothing wrong with teaching it in school as a means of promoting philosophical thinking. However the problem I see with a course taught is school might be the grading criteria. It would have to pretty loose as the purpose of the course should be to promote open minded thinking, not push indoctrination into a specific belief system.

This thread is 3 years old, haha.

I voted no without thinking about it enough. I actually think yes, to an extent. Morals should be taught in all parts of a childs life, from parents, religion, and school. Schools should be more of an enforcer of ethics, but by doing so they teach them. So if a kid cheats on a test he gets punished for it.

I don't think people are less ethical today as they were in the past. I think today things are simply much more exposed in this information age.

i posted in here... a while long generation ago.

i still think that morals should be taught by parents. whether or not you agree with your parents' set of morals... that is for you to decide when you realize it is your time to decide.

someone mentioned ethics: business ethics should definitely be a school-taught issue -- not saying a parent could not teach this to their children, but a school can be more objective, i guess is what i am aiming for.

if the school teaches objective ethics-like morals, it should be fine. otherwise, leave it to the parents to teach and/or the kids to learn on their own.

Morals are life's lessons that we learn as we go along. Are they truly imparted to us by some third party? Be that parent or teacher? If someone tells you this is right and that is wrong, surely it means nothing unless you learn that for yourself? Otherwise it's just like me with financial exams...I can pass them...doesn't mean I understand them

Parents should teach their kids morals.
If you want your school to teach your children morals then send them to some form of religious school(Catholic etc.). It should not be up to the State to teach morals or we will be drowning in more politically correct bullshit than we can handle.

so what your saying is everyone learns their morals always by the hard way? that sucks man...

but i can see your point. my buddy always tries to impart advice... seems i never learn until the lesson is really in my face.

and even then, there is only a 25% chance i will actually learn the lesson.. :D

Morals are something learned by one's self truly... Do I see harm in them being taight in school? No...But until it happens to you, I don't think one truly grasps it.

This really isn't a yes or no question. A better question would be "can morals be taught in school".

universal morals are hard to keep out because we have social rules, literature and just plain old decency

but other than that, no keep it out because it gets hard when you get down to details to picks who is right.
