Just thought I'd start this debate leading on for another thread. I personally hold the view that morals should be taught by the parents. As you get older you get to make your own mind up about things anyway. I know that if I had kids I wouldn't want them to be tought how to lead their life by a stranger in a school. The schools are failing at their job of teaching educational skills as well so maybe they should stick to teaching maths and english ect and leave the morals to the parents.

I agree that Morals should be taught by Parents.. But someone needs to teach where parents fail.. and Not all parents have morals..

But then I guess that can go to say. who is to Judge what are good morals and not..

I'm torn. I think a lot of morals should be taught by the parents...but then again a lot of morals are also taught while you're in school growing up without you even realizing it. But I did say 'no', that morals shouldn't be taught in school...at least the big ones.

I don't think morals should be taught so much as reinforced in school. But it seems like more parents are not teaching their kids any sort of morals. Not every kid needs it but it's better to be safe that sorry. As to what morals should be taught, society typically has a set. They're not perfect, but it's better than nothing (most of the time).

That being said, I voted yes.

Of course morals should be taught in school. All schools teach morals and the teachers would be doing a great disservice if they failed to do so. First let's look at the definition.

Dictionary.com defines morals as:
* Of or concerned with the judgment of the goodness or badness of human action and character: moral scrutiny; a moral quandary.
* Teaching or exhibiting goodness or correctness of character and behavior: a moral lesson.
* Conforming to standards of what is right or just in behavior; virtuous: a moral life.
* Arising from conscience or the sense of right and wrong: a moral obligation.
* Having psychological rather than physical or tangible effects: a moral victory; moral support.
* Based on strong likelihood or firm conviction, rather than on the actual evidence: a moral certainty.

"Teaching or exhibiting goodness or correctness of character and behavior"

Isn't that what teachers do every day?

I think it should be done by both. But then again, if teachers spent all their time teaching little Timmy or little Tammy about the difference between right and wrong then that would be taking away from the amount of time they have to teach them how to divide Pi by the square root of all that is evil.

Definitely moral teaching should be considered as a most important topic in schools.

Not all children are blessed with a good healthy peaceful family background some may be exception for this. Or their may be some students who are completely lonely and have lost their self-confidence.

Then what and where shud they go ? School is a perfect blend or rather in this case shud play a vital role to develop a moral in each and every kids life.... because what they learn today will reflect tommorow.

Children are like blank slate write anything at a early stage and then it remains with them forever... so along with education moral teaching or importance of moral shud also be taught to them.. to help build a good future and help creating a responsible citizen of our country.

schools are to educate. this does not mean teach ideals about what is right and wrong. this is the parent's or the religious organization's duty. if the schools were to teach morals, then you would, over time, have an education system specifically set up for communism.

I believe that a certain level of morals should be taught in schools. Not all families are centered and focused on morals, so there should be some taught in school to help maintain the society.

I also think that parents should be the ones to teach them in detail, If a parent can't then it should be in the hands of child welfare.

Schools should though focus on the educational level of each student, but again not completely ignore morals.

morals should be something you teach yourself, not the school system, which is therein tied to the government. Morals are a personal set of rules that governs each individuals personal views on the world. What business does the government have in that?

this is the parent's or the religious organization's duty

fuck that. Personally, I think instilling a sense of right and wrong in a child is proper, but at some point a person should form their own views about the world we live in. If the persons views are the same as their parents or religions, then fine, but the individual should always have the choice. Just because your church or parents told you something over and over again doesn't mean you have to believe it. (my point is, don't dictate your own life based on someone else's opinions) Someone may be 100% wrong about something, but they can go ahead and believe whatever bullshit they want to. (NWO) It is when people present their opinions as 'facts' with no evidence that i get pissed (NWO).

Whose morals?

The gangbanger that thinks it's ok to kill someone who looks at his girlfriend the wrong way, or the Mafia who collect cash through organised crime, or the super Christian who believes that sex before marriage is wrong.

This is not an easy question to answer. There are many levels of morals & I would not want my young child exposed to some of them.

Morals shouldn't be taught in school. There is no fact backing it, there is no reason we should "conform" our future leaders to believe in the same damn things. Leaves the teachers with too much power to corrupt the youth and also puts too much responsibility on them.

those damn teenage parents need to reap what they soe and accept the fact they are parents and PARENT THEIR CHILD.

My opinion on kids who don't understand about the rights of others should be forced to be home schooled so the parents have to accept their mistakes and if they don't, keeps them away from poisoning the rest of the youth who actually have a chance at a good life.

you can't teach morals from a book because individuality makes us who we are. Lets quit trying to find a "standard" to the way kids should be and embrace the difference we are.

And when those kids who were never taught anything by their parents (if they don't teach morals, I doubt they'll teach reading, writing, and all that) becomes adults, then what happens? They screw up and when send them to overcrowded jails? Yeah, there are kids out there that will do the wrong things, no matter what is done. But there's kids whose parents never do anything for them and, if given the right direction, can be productive members of society.

In my view morals should come from home. You cannot leave the total development of all aspects of a child's being up to a schoolteacher.

Some parents dont teach their kid's moral's. Your kid spends most of their time of the day with a teacher. So the teacher might as well teach it. BTW alot of teachers do teach moral's.

I say no. I think the parents should be on top of these things. Teachers have been getting caught doing some immoral stuff lately. However, if the student is showing lack of. I think maybe the school should get with the parents and discuss it with them.

The problem with this question is that the super majority of our population is held hostage by a small but extreemly vocal super minority.

I've beat the PC horse to death, so I won't stay long, but I think there is probably a general set of morals that a strong 90% plus of Westerners can agree on, but we're not allowed to talk about them for fear of possibly offending that one guy in 10 who's going to be indignant no matter what anyway.

I'm for cultured society, not the anarchy that is being pushed.
