Definitely go for it Dana, it looks like you can grow a solid beard, I"m currently doing the same thing, just shaving the neck.

It's not the weight IMO, but the costume. I'm about 190.

People coming in always told me that the real beard makes up for the lack of weight.

Although I'm getting gray in the beard, no where near being white, so washable white paint makes up for it.
