yes, the schools around here, its required to take 2 years of a foreign language class. where i went to school, Spanish was the only option. where hubby went to school, he had the option of either French or Spanish. if i would have had the option, French would have been my choice because Spanish is too easy (imo)

and yall have to remember, English is one of the hardest languages to learn. it really pisses me off when people think that non english speaking people arent trying because they cant speak it. who are you (general) to say that someone isnt trying to learn the language?
Language is weird. My beloved has lived in the US for 15 years has been immersed in American culture for 25. She still struggles with English. I know all the basic grammar rules of Japanese but can't speak a lick. I have several special needs students who are fluent in both Spanish and English. As I said, weird.

If you are coming to live here, then yes. I think people should adapt to a new culture. If I were to move to Germany, I would do my damned best to learn what I could before I moved there and then improve over time.

If I were visiting for a week, I might learn a few key words (bathroom, food, hotel, etc) but I don't think it would be necessary to speak full sentences.

It wouldn't be neccessary because the majority of Germans can speak fluent English. How many Americans can speak fluent German or even fluent any other language?

Yes, and it doesn't just apply to immigrants of America. If you immigrate to any country have some fucking class, and learn the language.
