I have a really good tripod already. A Canon lens would be useless to me because I have a Nikon camera. :p

Ok so get a Nikon or Nikor lens of the same caliber.

What kind of settings do you use for white balance and ISO? What about aperture and shutter speed?

I never change the white balance from automatic. If something is amiss in that department I fix it with one of my editors. Even at that it's extremely rare for me to change that setting. Shooting a white subject such as snow can pose a challenge... other than that it seems ok. As far as shutter speeds etc... well... the daytime shot was taken at 1/800 f5.0 and ISO 100 while using a tripod. The night shots were all at ISO 100. One at 1/10 sec f5.0, one at 1/60 sec f5.6, one at 1/30 sec f11 and one at 1/10 sec f5.0. You guess which ones. :D

I got this shot earlier this year. I think it's kinda cool. :D

I like the blueness of that shot. :thumbup

I'm going back on nights in January and then I shall start practicing again.

So I'm like.... hurry up January. :D

I would say its the 400mm...dont think the 300mm would get u as close as that...

Here's the scoop...

In the daytime shot I used the 70 - 200 @ 190mm, the shots over the ocean I used the 70 - 200 with the one furthest away at 70mm and the closer one at 200mm, The bigger night shot was taken by my 100 - 400 @ 300mm but it's been cropped big time... sharp lens eh :D, the smaller night shot taken with the Sigma 150 - 500 @ 500mm and it wasn't cropped because it's not as sharp as I would have liked. It was windy that evening and it was shaking that behemoth of a lens around while it was bolted on the tripod.

Yours is great. and yes, trying to get a good shot of the moon has always been hard for me, it always comes out too furry. I am not a photographer so I don't know about lenses and stuff, so that may be why lol
To do it properly one needs a good tripod or something very solid to lean against so the camera doesn't shake.

Thanks Toots... just go buy one and give Jim the bill. :D
LOL well I usually try to give him the idea that he's the one who thinks of things for me.. Christmas is coming after all. If he doesn't have any ideas.. I will just find one in a flyer and put it on his desk with a sticky note.. .. He usually takes to a good gentle prodding! ;)

The blueness in that shot is the moonlight reflecting off of fast moving clouds. :D

I leave my white balance setting on automatic as well. The reason I asked is because when I asked the guy at the camera store for advice he thought that changing my white balance setting might improve things. :dunno My moons always turn out fuzzy and orange. :willy_nilly:

Thanks Siph.

Hey... you get that cleaning kit yet?

Aye, I've used the various bits (aside from the swabs as they are limited) but even without using those - there seems an improvement. I'm just waiting for a rare blue sky test again.

Every other surface I have that seems white (wall, paper sheets) I'm seeing the bumps and whatnot of it so can't fully tell.

What I can say though is that the biggest piece in the upper left quadrant appears to have gone, fingers crossed.

Thanks for advising me to get it :)

I'll let you know as soon as I've done a blue test again.

You can also shoot a gray sky and convert that to greyscale. If there's any dust it should show up. If so redo the cleaning. Don't be afraid of using the swabs. They are quite cheap and readily available and it can really make a difference.

The moon usually is an orange'ish colour but that's easy to fix if you don't like it. Just convert the image to grayscale with a photo editor. :D As far as the fuzzy part are you using a tripod?
