The title says it all. Think about it. Why should the government tell us what to do, when it involves love, and our bodies? If the person is willing and consents to the act, it should be perfectly legal. But at the same time, the laws do help to prevent too many underaged pregnancies, and 13 year old girls from being whores.

Thoughts, opinions?

As I said, no matter the age, if you're smart enough to willingly say, "I want to have sex with so-and-so", it should be legal. As James said, the laws are mainly just to make punishments worse for sex offenders. The legal age could be 7 for all I care, but a legal age means dick if you don't educate people.

As a parent, I know it's going to happen eventually so when my son/daughter is 16/17 I won't really care if they start with their sexual thing. I'll be upset if they start at 13-15, but Hell it's what kids do.

well, I do think that a 11 year old has no place having sex. Plus a 7 year old is not even a sexual entity at that age.

I think there should be laws governing the age difference. A 13 year old girl getting oral off a 15 year old is not nearly as bad as if she got it off a 30 year old.

My opinion, you know what would make this a lot less confusing?

The Age of consent in all 50 states should be 18 for both boys and girls. Period. It's 18 to smoke. It's 18 to vote. It's 18 to join the service. It's 18 for emancipation.

Why are all of these things conforming in all 50 states?

Do you think the government can realistically make a difference and clamp down on under 18s smoking or having sex, sex especially?

Thats not the point of the law, Peter.

The point of the age of consent is to keep an 18+ person from having sex/sexually abusing a child-17 year old. Regardless of consent a minor is a minor and it's called statutory rape. If you're not old enough to legally move out and not be under your parents control, you can't consent to sex with an 18+ year old.

A 15 and a 17 year old wouldn't be prosecuted as was the case with that one guy in jail for 2 years.

13 years olds can legally have sex in Holland which has a less teenage pregnancy rate than both our countries (Here's its 16) Which of the three countries has the bigger problem?

I don't care about Holland, Peter.

The Netherlands have a population of 16 million, where as the US has 350 million.

Why are we even comparing the two in teenage pregnancies? Why not compare the two countries in murder rates where the US is a giant melting pot and Holland isn't. :smiley24:

I'm talking on proportion and given that you can compare a lot of Western countries that way with your murder rate and should ask yourself why, with good reasons, but thats for another topic.;)

There are far too many CULTURAL differences within our own borders, aside from those outside of our borders, for you to keep comparing smaller nations with us.

I'm getting queasy at reading this thread since I have two teenage daughters aged 15 and 17.
