Anyone done this? Stories about this?
I have a bit of gold/silver/diamonds I want to sell. I've been meaning to do this for so long but finally want to get it done this weekend.

Is this all a bunch of bullshit or could I actually make money?
I'm kinda scared to be played for a fool! :tooth

Go to a real jeweler, not one of those CASH FOR GOLD places or pawn shops. Those guys will always rip you off.

You're less likely to get taken to the cleaners from a respectable jeweler. Also, see if there are any "Ma and Pa" type jewelers around you.

Not a chain jeweler if you can avoid it. Usually "Ma and Pa" are the least likely to try to rip you off.

Thanks, Darrell. The place I want to go is a "fine" jewelry store, so I feel a bit better. There's a ChecknGold with a bunch of planted reviews on it and I just got skeeved out lol.

get more than one estimate

kind of hard to get screwed if you do that

gold is very high right now. not sure about diamonds. you may want to check on diamond prices and see if it would be better to wait on those.

I saw a program on tv a while back that sold gold to all the "cash for gold" services, and then to jewellers and compared the prices they got. Surprisingly, the cash4gold services offered more. Just one documentary I am aware, but it was interesting.

DO NOT SELL to the first place you go. Go to several places and get actual quotes. Even the mom and pop stores can rip you off.

I had a friend got to a local, reputable jewelry store and get a quote (he was just going to sell) then went to another store and got twice as much...

A general rule of thumb for jewelry. You can pawn or sell for about 10%-20% it's original value. So a piece you bought for $3000 will only get you $300-$600 tops

None of this is stuff I bought so luckily anything I get from it will seem ok lol. I have a giant bejeweled gold class ring from an ex (he told me to throw it out when I tried to return it to him, ok dick- sellin' it! lol) a chain, a gold coin, one tiny earring and a silver and diamond necklace from an ex. I think that's it.

Not expecting huge cash but I'd hate to leave with $1 knowing I'd been ripped off.

My dad sold some gold jewelry and shit at one of those Cash for Gold things at a hotel once lol. He got good money too, a few hundred dollars.

You're probably going to get screwed wherever you go because everyone wants to save/make more money just like you do. People tend to think their crap is worth a lot more than it really is.

Yea, that whole "mail in your gold" thing seems way too risky. More like "mail in your gold, we'll keep it, and then say we never received it". lol

It has no sentimental value whatsoever so I'm fine with selling it. As a grad student, I'm always in poverty :p

Pretty much what everyone has already said. I did it not too long ago. I had 2 small rings,2 broken chains, and a small pendant and got $300.
