Who do you blame for feeling self-conscious about feeling stupid, fat, ugly, worthless, not good enough, inadequate penis size, too skinny, too flat/big chested.

The things that I have issues about with myself. These things are all correctable. So It is all me. Not anyone else.

Myself. No one else just me.

EDIT ON SEEING THE POLL: The media doesn't really upset me. The models' look unattainable and that's because most of the time the images are airbrushed and I know and accept that. Besides I blame myself for a lot of things, that aren't even my fault in any way.

Some people do strive to be like the models/celebrities and it does have quite an impact on their lives to dress a certain way, to be a certain weight etc becuase they think that looking that way will make them "perfect".

I grew up with very supportive parents. I was always told that as long as I tried my best that was good enough and I was never told this was wrong with me or that was wrong with me. I think any self conscious tendencies that I have come from my inner competitiveness. I'm only self conscious when I'm the focus of attention. Not a big fan of that. :ninja

The dictionary defines it as: unduly conscious of oneself as an object of notice

Therefore answer 1 on this poll is correct. Personally though, I'm not self conscious, not that I think I'm perfect, I just think overall I'm an ok bloke and dont really worry about what people think of me, you cant please everyone, all the time so there's no point in worrying about it.:D

For the model bit, I like how many agencies are branching out... and cracking down on the unhealthy models. And how BB(big beautiful) models have taken off and are getting more attention, should help the weaker minds who are driving themselves to crazy diets and trying to reach goals they never will. I've spoken to my Doctor and we've figured out realistic goals for me.

Totally with your there Pete. I'm not perfect, but I'm happy knowing no one is.

You can't make everyone happy, just yourself really.

Oh, this is more about body image? In terms of that, I'm not really self-conscious at all. I like where my body is at. You can't make me show skin though, but that's for reasons beyond self-consciousness. :ninja

be yourself
people usually like people who are them selves better
I have heard and seen where a lot of guys and gals mold their significant other to their liking
and they get bored with it or the other gets fed up and kicks rocks....

I aim to do better with my body
but not for anyone but me PERIOD!
I used to think that was a selfcentered act but I realized that if your not happy with yourself
You are going to make anyone else happy either and eventually it will blow up on you

I think this one would go deeper, if this is the case I think there might be relationship problems.

I tossed it in there because I know it would be a big factor for some people, I felt it deserved it's own place having been down that road before myself.

But I know now, it doesn't mean the person thinks less of you, or isn't attracted to you. Just because you re with someone doesn't mean you stop seeing beauty. Desire and fantasy are two big pieces in a healthy relationship providing both parties are open and talking about it.

It's when these two things are repressed or ignored... where issues arise. JMO

Oh, Hey Springer, could you move this to the debate section?

I blame self-consciousness on a lot of things. Blaming it on myself just because I am conscious of myself, I don't know, to me it is much more than that. Maybe there are people who have grown up through their lives with parents who seem to 'notice' things. I can't count how many times my mum has pointed out every time I put on weight or my legs are thick or my arse is like a duck's arse. What if they did this since you were little? And there's other things like peer pressure, bullying, the media, etc. When you're very young, and you look up to your parents, you don't have the ability to make a choice and decide, you don't have the ability to think critically.
What I'm saying is, a lot of things shape someone to be self-conscious. It is not purely the person's own fault, something made them self-conscious in the first place. If we lived in a world where everything was accepted and nothing discriminated and glorified, we wouldn't have to worry about who we are. People choose, but really, how much do they actually get a choice when so much has shaped that person to be that way? These are things that are instilled into the person, is it really so simple to just dismiss awful thoughts about yourself? No. Sounds easy, but it's not, unless you are skilled in changing your own way of thinking. Not everyone is, so therefore not everyone has a choice, which means self-consciousness cannot entirely be blamed on the person themself.

It's the main reason I made the thread, but any self-conscious tendency really... if you have one, they generally breed into more.

That would be true for the people who fall for everything they see on tv or read in mags, papers, or online. Kinda pathetic that people can not be happy with thierselves.
