The drugs may not be in the streets, but they addicts still are. You wouldn't be any safer really, since these people are still out roaming the streets. I've seen first hand what many terrible deeds drug-influenced minds are capable of. This kind of program won't clean up a neighborhood, it just displaces the mess. I would hate to live in a neighborhood nearby one of these clinics. Property value would tank.

My point is that this kind of a center won't do enough good to justify cost.

I def don't leave anywhere near a clinic like this one but I have seen how a very bad area in the center of my city became full of life again thanks to this. Most drug addicts don't mess with anyone, and the ones that do would do so even more or the same if this places wouldn't exist. When I was a kid I could see people taking heroin from the bus going home, now there's nothing of the short. Even if the streets are only a bit more safe it is worth it for the kids not to step on one of the needles.

OMFG They have to be bull shiting us Right? Yes the drugs are not being used by some people on the street. But what they want to do is just terrible. I have worked in Psych hospitals and drug rehabs. I will tell you what there is nothing worse then having to deal with someone who is detoxing from some of this crap, but that is why we have paid professionals to deal with it. Not to help people stay high.

How do you know that the people using heroin on the bus aren't doing so anymore because of the clinic? Doesn't really prove causality, it's much more likely to be a coincidence - may be related to the time period (e.g. cocaine and the 70-80's).

Dare I say, responsible illegal drug addicts are not a social problem. These individuals are not the people leaving used needles in parks, or otherwise creating an eyesore in the community. The issue at hand is how to deal with the irresponsible drug user, who would willfully avoid these clinics. A person who cares so little as to dirty up a neighborhood certainly won't care enough to seek help.

Sounds like we live in totally different parts of the world where society functions differently from the description you've given. And guess what? We do. So that may have something to do with the difference of opinion on this issue.

And as far as the hand clapping goes, if that is how I choose to express that I agree with someone's post instead of typing out another post that just says the same thing I will continue to exercise that choice.

I honestly don't care if it would work or not, that's not the issue to me. The issue is using tax-payer money to set up a place for people to break the law legally! That makes no sense. It's an amazing double standard and misappropriation of tax dollars. You can't make a law and then let people break it, especially at tax-payer expense!
