Rooting can cause a lot of issues. I am assuming you are looking to upgrade to Jelly Bean and Skip ICS ?

1) do you have the original code for your carrier ?
2) once you root you will no longer get Android Carrier updates and will need to always root yourself
3) many root software programs have glitches. As an example, some lose WiFi while others lose Camera access and yet others are 100% perfect. Its a hit and miss but if you don't have the original software see item 4..
4) if don't root properly, you have a nice paperweight.. :D

Some remain adamant that Rooting is the only way to go.. Yet read the comments below ( in the link ) and all those who have problems with features promised and not yet available..

Your choice..

What do you mean by the original code from carrier?
The original image ?...the phone does have a recovery..i havent tried it though.
I am not worried about carrier updates...they had an OTA that locked the boot loader so we couldnt try different roms so I am stuck with gingerbread unless I jump alot of hoops.
I mainly need root to freeze apps and to change font size.
My phone could already hotspot right from the box.
Making my camera silent would also be nice...I had found the line of code to have the option visible..but had to have root to make the change...so I still have that loud shutter sound.
I am mainly after app freezing... if I can accomplish without rooting..I will be happy enough.
Do you know if its possible without root on gingerbread?....everything I read says I need root....but oddly enough the option comes stock with ICS and JB.

Simply put here is what I do know from playing with my Galaxy phone..

What do you mean by the original code from carrier? The carriers all adjust the Android to their versions. Hence ICS or Jelly Bean on AT&T would be an AT&T Version not just Android.

The original image ? Right but be careful because not all phone image correctly. A recovery might be impossible.

I am not worried about carrier updates...they had an OTA that locked the boot loader so we couldnt try different roms so I am stuck with gingerbread unless I jump alot of hoops. Right but OTAs are what become no longer available to Rooted phones. This of course applies to the main software but should there be a patch you will need to manually apply it.

I mainly need root to freeze apps and to change font size. Not sure what you mean by Freeze Apps ? Depending on the phone there are Apps to remove Root Apps you don't want in Google Play. Can you not change the Font Size in Setting / Display / Font Size on your phone ?

My phone could already hotspot right from the box. Yes so does mine.. Called Tethering :)

Making my camera silent would also be nice...I had found the line of code to have the option visible..but had to have root to make the change...so I still have that loud shutter sound. Can't you turn down the sound on the phone ? I am not sure how often you use this but it is a very minimal part of my phone use and usualy I will just hit the mute button

My recommendation if you don't want to be rooting the phone weekly is to find an App that will solve the problem for you.

Like they say, don't fix what ain't broken..

The shutter sound is pretty loud it mimics the old film with electric motor
advance...it stays the same even when turned down to vibrate..its pretty
loud....ok for the house but will get you some dirty looks at important functions
like "cant you find something quieter"
As far as fonts..I dont have that setting....I can set some applications{fonts}
though within the application itself.
Rooting is still temping...if nothing else just for the purpose of being able to
set up a firewall ;)

OK well mine goes right to a dead mute, but I could understand. Mind you I hardly use my phone as a camera..

Did you finally Root it..

As I found out Freeze Apps and removing Original Apps that came with the Carrier Software is the same.. There are a few really good programs with 4 1/2 stars in Google Plus to remove such apps..

I am not sure about a Firewall but i use Norton's as an antivirus. You can be cheap and use AVG if you want but for $45.00 a year I found the added security that is unlocked from Norton's was worth the write off on my business expenses. Oh and Yah Norton's basic program is FREE.

I also use a program called AirPush Detector ( picks out Spam ) and Advanced Task Killer Free ( to kill apps and save battery ) if you don't already have them..

I dont really want to start removing apps I cant get back...would rather freeze em.
Plus I have tons of apps i have installed myself...many of them run when not using them..thus I could freeze em..and thaw out if i need to use the app....plus they dont show up in your app drawer when froze
I too use air push...had been using avst till today but then switched to trust go security {as it inched ahead of avast in detection} and currently is number one....was in jan of feb anyway whenever the tests were done.

Still havent rooted yet...am tossing the idea back and forth.

Look at App Quaranteen Root/Freeze and see if that works for you in Google Play?

Hell I do to...thus the reason I havent rooted nor installed another rom...I dont understand the damn directions for one..just as well be in Spanish.

Actually most of the 5 star ( fast rooting apps ) ones are in Russian, which really scares me.. No idea if they have spyware included or not.. :mad

This may be of interest to you...its not a real time scanner...but checks all your apps against about 45 different main av scanners

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.virustotal&hl=en

It will take 2 or 3 minutes the first run..if you have alot of apps
Its fast as many apps are already in the data base
Every file has a unique signature...since many have already been scanned by others..its fast.
If you have a question mark located next to an app you can upload it.
I actually use the PC to upload..so I dont have to create an account with the android app.
I use astro file manager and back up my "installers"..and hang on to old versions of an app ...as sometimes they are better than the new versions...anyway..you just copy that file to your pc then upload it.
Or,
If you install a new app and want to check it just run the virus total app.

No root required :p

I rooted mine shortly before I got my iPhone. I had no issues and it was pretty easy to do.
