Ah, yes. People take antibiotics like they're just candies. Now, bacteria are licking their wounds and wrecking havoc to people's health. That is why it is important to seek medical advice before taking medications, especially antibiotics. And if the physician would tell a patient to take it every eight hours (or three times a day) for seven days, the patient should comply.

Most doctors have scaled back in prescribing antibiotics for issues like ear infections unless it's pretty bad in an effort to scale back high resistance strains. Also we can't completely avoid antibiotics because it's in our food. Because of the way we farm meat with tons of sick animals in tight quarters, they're constantly injected with antibiotics to keep them alive until slaughter and we in turn eat that meat that's been injected with tons of antibiotics.

This is a frightening situation. But it probably comes down the time when doctors prescribed antibiotics at the drop of a hat. What did this do, well it caused the human body to build up a resistance against certain antibiotics. Yes, doctors have now become more selective about when they give out an antibiotic now, believe me you have to be in pretty bad shape before they will do it. But it might be too little too late in this case. The resistance level that the human body has developed has become higher and higher so now its becoming to the point where no antibiotic is becoming effective.

I too would agree that the outlook here is pretty scary and although the development of Antibiotic Resistance is in actual fact a natural phenomenon - it was made worse by many other interconnecting factors - like for instance the fact that pressurized, over-worked doctors were prescribing antibiotics unnecessarily - mainly because the general public were demanding them and the only way to keep their patients happy - was to give them a script for something that they didn't need.

Which wasn't helped by the fact that antibiotic based products became freely available without a prescription and then when " germ paranoia " set in and people started using antibacterial products excessively in and around the house on a daily basis - this was yet another contributing factor - particularly as - ALL antibacterial soaps, detergents, toothpaste, tooth whitening products, antiperspirants/deodorants, shaving products, creams and color cosmetics - contain active antibiotic ingredients - such as Triclosan and Triclocarban.

Made even worse by the fact that as - already mentioned by Rhodolite - a lot of the foods we eat contain high levels of antibiotics and especially - meat, poultry, eggs and dairy produce - due to the fact that the majority of animals are reared using antibiotic growth hormones - many people are consuming high levels of antibiotics without actually knowing it.

So yes - as antibiotic resistance doesn't just pose a threat - but is now considered a major global health threat to which there is currently no solution and not likely to be in the foreseeable future - as there is now strong evidence to suggest that the over use of antibacterial products along with the other contributing factors - has the potential to create a " superbug " that could be resistant to even the most potent antibiotic - I think its something that we should all be taking very seriously.
