A friend just told me her mom lost 50 pounds. Normally, I'd say wow, awesome, good for her, but she had gastric bypass. I know for some people that might be the only option, but does it really count as her putting forth effort in losing weight (like some people on this site!) or is just a consequence of the surgery?

Hmmm, well it's a big ordeal either way... you can get that procedure and still not loose weight really if you eat crap and don't exercise/maintain.

Close friend of mine had it done, she's lost over 200lbs, still over weight, still not taking care of herself.

I'd congratulate her if she is using the surgery as a way of changing her life style for the better, so she's lost this weight but now she is eating healthier and excerising.

I think it depends, like the others say. If they used it as the easy way, no way. If they're eating right and trying to exercise along with the surgery, sure.

Don't tell Aunt Jill that. She had it done a few years ago.

I work with a man who had the surgery 2 years ago. He was tall, weighed about 380 lbs., and was always out of breath. He didn't tell anyone he was getting the surgery. When he came back to work, he had lost enough weight to make him look very different.

He wasn't ashamed to tell anyone who asked how and why he did it. His doctor basically told him if he didn't lose the weight... he'd be dead. He tried to do it through diet, but he was so used to eating such large meals and not exercising that it didn't work for him. He then looked into the surgery.

He now rides a bike when weather permits for miles. He goes running. He entered a marathon this past summer and finished it. He talks about the amount of food/beverages he takes in now compared to before. He's actually become a healthnut of sorts.

This type of weight loser I would definitely congratulate.

That's what happened to my aunt. Her kidneys were shutting down and they told her to lose weight now or find a new kidney. She was on all sorts of medications. Dieting made a difference but not enough. She's lost quite a bit of weight since the surgery. She's off all of her medicine except her thyroid one (family curse).

Gosh, I think any form of weight loss is worth a congrats. Well, maybe not congrats, but an acknowledgment of some kind... only if you feel so inclined.

I knew somebody who had that and really never lost much weight at all because they ate junk and wouldn't exercise. If she is losing weight, no matter how she's going about it, then it's worth a congratulations. Any attempt to make yourself healthier is worthy of praise.

I'm not very close to the friend, so I don't know the details, but if it's someone like Red mentioned, then I would be more than willing to be enthused by the news. But if it's someone who is doing it to cheat, then it's kinda not fair to everyone out there trying to do it the hard way. I don't know. It was just something I had never thought about and didn't really know what to do when she told me.
