Republicans attempt to stifle action on climate change

After first day in Congress, Republicans have outlined three bills aimed at limiting power of the Environmental Protection Agency

Republicans have wasted no time in using their new majority in Congress to try to block the authority of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to act on climate change.

In their first full day in the new Congress, Republicans outlined three different bills – encapsulating three different strategies – aimed at limiting the powers of the EPA. It also shut down a house committee that had tackled energy and climate issues.

The first, introduced by Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, would declare that greenhouse gas emissions are not subject to the Clean Air Act - even though supreme court ruled in 2007 that they are.

The second, introduced by Ted Poe of Texas, would block funding to any government agency associated with cap-and-trade.

The third, introduced by Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, is relatively modest, seeking a two-year delay in EPA regulation of carbon dioxide and methane emissions.

But that could make it the most likely to succeed. In the Senate, a Democrat from coal-rich West Virginia, Jay Rockefeller, has been calling for a bill to delay EPA action on climate change.

The EPA began the process of regulating greenhouse gas emissions under new rules for major power plants and oil refineries that went into effect this month.

But as last November's mid-term elections made clear, environmental regulations have become a favourite target of the conservative Tea party movement.

In an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal, Fred Upton, the Michigan Republican who will lead the energy and commerce committee, teamed up with Tim Phillips, who is seen as a driving force behind the Tea Party groups to call the EPA moves towards regulation a job killer and an unconstitutional power-grab.

unsurprising, really :(

a little confusing to me. i was under the impression that all the climate change stuff was really a scam by the liberals to shake down the biggest polluters with all these regulations.

as somebody with a degree in the biology, i look at all of this climate change and world ending catastrophe talk with a cocked eyebrow. if you can take the long view, this is a very unstable planet to begin with. can't hardly tell from one aeon to the next what's going to be underwater and what's going to be a mountaintop.

the humans have not seen a really powerful tectonic event in recorded history. the geologic record indicates that major shit goes down every few thousand years. we're overdue. so what? mutate or die.

Well there's no denying that the climate change phenomenon has been hijacked to push through things like carbon trading, which is just another money making scam from Wall St.

If you look into the latest scientific research, the evidence is getting stronger all the time.

It's also worth remembering things like the Ozone Layer, Acid Rain etc. These were human caused problems that were solved.

The key is to ignore the mainstream media in issues like this, neither side can be trusted.

I've looked into that quite a lot and it's mostly misconstrued. They have been cleared of any wrong doings by the scientific community, most of the "controversy" comes from misunderstanding and cherry picking emails that are misrepresented.

ed, we got off to a little rocky start, but i'm glad we got past that.

i've got about 25 years on you and i'm seeing that we share a lot of notions that i was much older than you are now before i finally realized that was the way things were.

i used to believe that one side was right and the other wrong. the older i get, the more i see the extremes being so full of shit that sometimes it's almost impossible to tell the left from the right on any given issue.

I'm not saying global warming does not exist. I'm simply saying that it is more of natural cycles than anything else. Sure, we contribute to it, but overall it is just a cycle that our planet goes through. We have evidence that the earth warms and cools all the time.

We did indeed and I'm glad too :)

yeah the extremes in these instances are the problem, both sides have vested interests in the matter. I try and just stick to the science :D

Forget about climate change and what's causing it because that's not what's important here.

Look at the pollution and how many people it kills each year. Isn't that important at all?

Yeah it is. Didn't say it wasn't.

Isn't China quickly becoming the top polluter?

They sure are... If our politicians ever did the right thing we might be able to help curb that a little, though we will never have the power to stop it.

And I love when people talk about saving the planet. We are not capable of harming the planet, it's us that we are watching out for and making sure the planet is livable for us. I'd like to see it stay clean

you've got to be even more careful with the scientists than the media. they're much more skillful at fudging data and hiding the back room deal they made with scum like monsanto and BP to get results that fit what big biz is trying to sell to the public.

even without dirty dealing, there is a whole lot more disagreement in the professional scientific community about what's true and what's not about many of these topics so many of you will roll over people with than you realize.

i have a degree and worked in medical research as well as a number of other technical positions before the bushwhackers pulled the plug on my career. i'm going to be calling a lot of people out for the arguments that include the word 'science' in it to refute the statements of others. it's put up or shut up time for these atheists who think theists are stupid or crazy. show me the documents or don't try the argument. i'm not going to go for it, especially from people lacking education in the field.

Why does it sound like you're talking about all scientists, trying to make them out to be liars?

and why are you a theist what evidence do you have

that's your perspective, it's not my intention. i have lived and worked with scientists as well as hold a college degree in marine biology. what are your qualifications?

i have repeatedly stated my position on what i think god is and isn't. go study some of my responses in the religion forum and frame a less confrontational question that isn't so broad and makes sense.

You're implying that I need some sort of deep experience in science to even comment on the bad attitude you have for the scientific community?

I'm not going to comb through multiple threads to try and construct your theistic views. Just summarize it.

KMA. one more time. i lived and worked with them. i have first hand knowlege of instances of intentionally falsified data and have encountered it repeatedly in investigative reporting on projects i was not participating in. i am in no way condemning the entire community. in fact, i just recently posted a very strong statement of regret from the chemist who invented ecstacy where he spoke of how much it hurt him that his inventions are being abused as recreational drugs and that there have been deaths associated with it's use.

i don't know who you think you're talking to or what you do for a living, but i am not going to 'just summarize' a fucking thing for you unless you want to pay me my 2 hour minimum fee of $300 and $150/hr i need beyond two hours to satisfy your BS with my research.

Calm down.

I was simply asking you why you are a theist.

oh please

for gods sake we have people living 20 years longer than 100 years ago. Give or take

That makes your comment nothing but typical liberal gibberish.... IE: Bullshit :D

The point is this is all about abuse of power but presidents. Both parties do it. They fail on the legislative end so they find another way to get their way. With little oversight or accountability.

Surely that would go against the degree in marine biology you got? And when you guarded the tomb of the unknown soldier? And when you worked on wall street and pioneered the Pillington Brand sale? And when you went to the moon and discovered a race of super smart algae..
