Republic vs Democracy: Where are we going?

It would be nice if we could trim government back so that it is a near-passive republic again. As it stands now we are very close to an oligarchy: rule by the rich through the selected elected.

I think it is now to the point where it is not we are close but actually are an Oligarchy
 
Unfortunately I think its going down. Its not 100% but you can draw some interesting parallels between the US and the late Roman Republic.

Granted I'm not saying we're going to fall, the Romans and their remnants lasted another 14 centuries after the transition after all, but it wasn't the same place. We also have the benefit of modern economic and gov't institutions that are not disintigrated as easily...
