Those who are Americans, please take time to remember the veterans who gave of themselves so we can enjoy the freedoms we have. It seems so many folks get wrapped up in the weekend and the start of the summer season and forget why we celebrate memorial day.:usa:

You don't have to be an American to appreciate veterans. We celebrate 25th April as Anzac day, Europe celebrates 11th November as Remembrance Day.

For all those who serve, and all those who have served before them, God bless and keep safe.

I wish people would understand what Memorial day is suppose to be about.

I see too many posts on facebook from vets, active service members or their spouses talking about thanking those in the military for their service to this country. And I so want to correct them, I mean of ALL people they should understand that Memorial day is a day to remember those who have fallen in service to this country.

But I just keep my mouth shut as to not incite a shitstorm....

We are fortunate around here that the veterans section of the local cemeteries are immaculately maintained and every grave gets a flag most of which are placed by local youngsters. That was something we took serious when we were growing up. The placing of the flags and the ceremonies were a somber reminder of the loss of so many in wars.

Just my 2 cents...but there are plenty of people who go in to the military and come out completely changed. You've got people who are killed in action and you've got people who come back totally different and, for all intents and purposes, the person they used to be IS dead.

Me too. And add in the sad fact that our freedom has not been in any jeopardy whatsoever for 67 years and counting - it makes succesive Memorial Days all the more sad and tragic. We fight corporate wars today - freedom has jack shit to do with it.

And on edit - before anyone gets their drawers in a knot over my comment above - I'm in no way disrespecting the fallen - I'm am speaking ill only of the corporate bastards and their lackies in our governmental corporatocracy that sent them to their deaths in the name of faux freedom.

Too many businesses in America are open on Memorial Day, such as at the boat dealership where my dad used to work. Some businesses can't shut down on this day. But many can, yet don't. That to me is a little disrespectful to our veterans on the part of the owners of these businesses who stay open on Memorial Day just to make an extra buck.
