Recently, in a English class, my professor was reviewing two papers. One was written from a logical point of view. The paper used statistics to show how immigration into the United States is bad for our society. Another paper was from a Haitian woman's point of view. It showed the poverty she lived in, and her quest to go to America to live a better life. It was a very emotional-based essay.

When discussed, it was clear that almost every student other than me agreed with the emotional essay. They completely denied the statistics and facts showing how immagration can bring down society as a whole just to help that single individual that appealed to their emotions.

It was very eye opening to see how easily an entire class can be pursueaded into an idea simply with a sad story.

I, on the other hand, see it differently. Why should we decrease the over all happiness and prosperity of our American citizens just to make sure an individual is happy? Is that one person's happiness worth the suffering of countless people?

Immigration into the USA "specially illegal" is a burden on tax-based resources that cost taxpayers billions. It continues the growth of demand for cheap labow and low wages exponentially. Take into consideration the growing poverty rate, and poverty's tendancies to raise crime rate, and it is indeniable that U.S. Citizens are getting hurt.

It scares me how open humans are to emotional manipulation. It almost begs the question, how can a virtious leader who wants to improve society ever compete with a manipulative, lieing politician that can easily appeal the the fickle people's emotions?

For instance; when 9-11 happened, George W. Bush had the highest approval ratings of all time. Over 90% of the nation. It goes to show that humanity is a race controlled by emotion. Especially fear. :(

Immigration is a great thing... Sure illegal immigrants steal our jobs but without them we wouldn't have great Asian and Mexican food!

They are also stealing the jobs that most Americans don't want to do.

I also agree with shygirl for the most part except that 911 was an act of war and that doesn't go unnoticed. IMO our retaliation wasn't an act of fear but anger. I certainly wasn't scared, I was ready to kill.

If you took my comment any amount of seriousness... I'm sorry....

Anger is emotion. We retaliated with emotion. Emotion gave Bush 90% aproval ratings.

Just like emotion put hitler into power.

Its an overeexagerated problem and I also agree with Dana, for once. Funny how you get these chavvy parents with hooligan kids moaning about how their kids who dont pay attention at school and mug old ladies cant get a job because of immigrants. Then in their next breath they moan about immigrants sponging of the government while munching through their chineese, Indian or kebab takeaway! Make up your fucking mind!

Peter, your shallow and stereotypical views are creating a very bad 1st impression of you.

I don't know any of my friends nor parents who complain about how their children cannot get jobs due to immigrants. I'd love to see your sources though. They are reliable. i'm sure.

I'm sure it has happened, but those are ignorant people whom don't account for all of a particular state.

Yes, anger is an emotion. Are you to say we should have let them attack us without retaliation? If we were to do that the world would view us as a push over and we would find more countries (or terrorists) testing to see how far they could push us.

I'm simply saying that we are controlled by emotion. It doesnt mean we wouldn't make a decision what-so-ever had we not emotion. It would mean our decision would be based on wisdom, experience, and logic.

Well point well taken. So how do you suppose we make decisions devoid of emotion? I do not think this is humanly possible for every situation.

I'm not quite sure. I guess that is the real question.

I think it might be a good start to make humanity aware of this. At least then, they have a concious idea of emotion vs logic in the back of their minds when making a decision.

Other then that, I guess it would be best to have a logical leader. The only problem with a truely logical person, is that they have to appeal to the emotion-based people. History can show how that can be accomplished though, i'm sure. Don't you agree KpAtch?

I think that generally our leaders do not act in emotion. There are too many steps in the process to achieve their goal and the emotion does not last long enough as rash decisions do not see the light of day.

Politics and emotion go hand in hand as people get angry with the way things go. So I think the public as a whole will be full of emotion every time they go to the polls.
