What does it mean if you have a numberr under where it says 'referrals' in your profile?

I don't have a number, but kept meaning to ask for ages now and keep forgetting.

When a new member signs up they can say whether or not an existing member referred them to this site. So if I tell a friend and they register here they can put me down as their referrer and then my profile will show one referral (I still have none).
