It brings back a pile of childhood memories for me as well Fred. I spent many hours rafting the " oceans of the world " and that's what I think about when I hear them.

I learned they can be a real indicator of where the fish are. I also learned a largemouth bass will eat one in a second given a chance. If they flush at your arrival on a spot the fish will be more cautious as well.

Their eggs blend in very well with their surroundings don't they.

Absolutely. If you didn't know where to look (we knew where the eggs were cause we saw the mama) you might just walk on by.

When I was a kid once we found a killdeer with a nest on the railroad tracks. Of course my sister and I were fascinated and had to check on it every day...poor mama killdeer. :ninja The eggs hatched and as far as I know, the babies survived.
