Take a look at "World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War" by Max Brooks
You don't need to like zombies or zombie books/movies to really appreciate this book. Well worth the time to read it

Wally Lamb- This Much I Know is True

It's about a man who's life is spiraling out of control and who's twin brother is a schizophrenic. It flashed back and forth between present and past.

I bought it at the Atlanta airport because I had 8 hours to burn and it was huge. I've lost it since (stupid roommates) and have missed it almost every day. It's one of the best books I have ever read.

And also Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas trilogy. Odd has the gift of seeing and talking to the dead. It's really different and really good. He's this 20 year old kid and the book is written from his PoV and he just has a really fun personality.

I like most any of his books really- some other good ones of his are Life Expectancy (it has mind control), The Husband (Kidnapping with ransom), The Face (not really sure how to explain it, but the main character is on security detail for the biggest star in the country), and From the Corner of His Eye (it tells a lot of different people's stories and then shows how they're lives are intertwined).

I'm a huge fan, can you tell?

Yes, yes, yes! I love him, too! He's a great author. I read The Husband, I also read this one about a clairvoyant who worked for a local police department. I can't remember the name of that one though. By the Light of the Moon was another good one.

Also, this is not a Dean Koontz book, but another REALLY good horror novel is The Summoning by Bently Little. Religion, superstition and folk lore combine and the details this author paints on such an evil spirit is absolutely spine-tingling.

:homo: any Wally Lamb, but this one especially, and it's long! Praise the Lord for long books!

You've read it?! You're my new BFF!!!

I would almost go so far as to say it's a life changing book. It really made me take stock of my life and what mattered.

Kafka was great. Dante was good too...Odyssey?

I've read the Inferno by Dante and the Odyssey. I haven't read the Iliad though so I've added it to my list. I haven't read and Kafka so I'll keep an eye out.

I agree with Satin :)

Also:

Jane Hamilton - she has written three or four books. Map of the World - about a family who watches their neighbor's children and one of them drowns. The book is about how they deal in the community, etc. after it happens. The Book of Ruth - about a woman who is a little slow, and lives in an abusive home with her mother, and then with her husband - it's very strange, but very different and a good book. The Short History of a Prince - about a boy who wants to be/is a professional ballet dancer.

I LOVE Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and if you start to like his writing he has written a shit ton of books. He wrote Love in the Time of Cholera which sounds stiff, but is just lovely lovely lovely!! I would avoid 100 years of solitude like the plague though!

I also LOVE Albert Camus - The Stranger, The Plague - they are very dry and not very exciting - similar to Hemmingway. However, the message is very subtle and they just are a pleasure to read.

One of my favorite ALL TIME books is Socrates in Love - it's the number one selling novel in Japan, or was. It's about two teenagers who fall in love. The language is beautiful, I can only imagine what it would be to read it in Japanese. Made me cry my soul out, but in a lovely way.

If you love Science Fiction or Fantasy, you MUST read Orson Scott Card - he has written a shit ton of books - a lot of which are related, but not in the dumb way that Dune keeps going and going.

Another favorite book is God of Small Things - by some chick with the last name of Roy. It's about a family living in India in the 1940's I think? I love the unique way she tells the story, but it's kind of like reading an ee cummings poem. If that makes sense??! So it's not for everyone.

Anyways - I read A LOT. I read probably a book a week. I enjoy deep thick hard to read classics as well as junk books like Twilight and Vampire Diaries. My favorites are usually in between those two categories. I've read science fiction and non fiction and fantasy - so ask away!

I've read The Stranger by Camus. I really enjoyed it.

I love Stephen King books and I think the next one I'm going to read is called "Under the Dome". If you're into Stephen King you might like it. :)
A friend recommended under the dome on facebook just before Xmas. I do like Stephen King so I'll have a look

The Face - Dean R. Koontz

Ooo I've read Lightening by Koontz and greatly enjoyed it. I've always said to myself to read some of his other books but never have lol

And thanks everyone! I've been absolutely swamped with recommendations on here and other places so I've got a massive reading list of about 60+ books and 20 authors. I'm off to the library now :D

I found why I couldn't find many books I wanted.

a) A few have been taken out by other people
b) Most of them are at other libraries

So I'm going to have to reserve them even though it costs money to do that. But it'll still be cheaper than buying them or buying the Kindle I've been eyeing up. :willy_nilly:

I don't know how to feel about the Kindle. I like books. They smell good, they feel good.... it feels somehow wrong to read them on a screen instead.

But the storage capacity is tempting.

I like the look and feel of books but I have no room for any new books. I already have a massive pile ontop of my bookcase which is likely to topple down one day and cause someone a lot of harm :willy_nilly:

ok - really? You liked Kafka? Which one? The Metamorphosis?

I've heard people say this over and over, and I have read it like three times. I don't get what there is to like?

Dante and The Odyssey are super awesome, but not that fun to read alone.
actually I liked the Castle and the Trial. Metamorphosis was just plain weird...

Our libraries work on a network, if a book you like is at another library on the network they will ship it to the library of your choice.

YES! I had thought of this, but then when I went to post it I completely forgot what it was I was going to post.

I LOVED that book, and it stuck with me for months. There's even a chapter in there about a girl in Louisiana. :)

I've read The Stranger by Camus. I really enjoyed it.

Then The Plague is for you as well! :)

I also really liked the Count of Monte Cristo, but I read an abridged version on accident :(

I am going to have read those! :) I have them I think in the same book that Metamorphosis came in, but people only talk about Metamorphosis usually. thanks PJ!
